Well, my house is newly constructed therefore it's taking time by QTEL to do the cabling work .... if your place is already having Qtel cables/ tele lines ,,, it normally takes 1 - 2 weeks for connection..

Hotline # is 115. You have to apply for ADSL line from any Qtel office in doha, once you get your Customer ref. no from Qtel office you have to call 115 to make appointment (date and time) for the connections.

There customer services people seems to be helpful, in mycase they were not able to help since the matter was in the Technical dept !

Thxs Speed - how long have you been waiting?

Actually, how long does it take QTEL to install a 512kbps connection? And do they have a telephone "hotline" for calling them with problems? Are they responsive to customer requests?

Thanks for the info.

ADSL line 512kbps will cost QR200 (monthly) and ADSL modem will cost QR165/- (one time payment)

if you opt for higher speed the charges will be more ... check Qtel website for details...

I had ADSL (sharing) in my old home which was working fine ... now i have applied for my own ADSL line in my new house ... and still waiting for Qtel to come and fix the line !!

Thanks Qatman, I should have posted this earlier. If you have time could you tell me the approximate cost of an ADSL connection? Expensive, I bet.

Also, does QTEL give reliable service? Is the connection often "down for maintenance" as they are in other places? Thanks.

The only simple option at present is to get an ADSL connection from QTEL.

I'll be living in a company-supplied apartment. Assuming the company does not supply a wireless connection throughout the building, what do you think is the best way for me to get any kind of internet connection for my apartment? Thanks.

That would depend on the brand of router that you will get, Linksys, 3 Com, Belkin or Net Gear ...

3Com got two antennas and the range of it is really great regardless of being a 'G' series.

Belkin or US Robotics got also a very good range.

Linksys got a 'G' and 'N' series, the 'N' series got a very good range.

The structure of the house would effect the signal strength, you can either get some 'Range Expanders' or get extra antennas which is not applicable to some models.

You can also do a simple trick with some of the desktops and make them act as Routers too, just a simple bridging between your LAN and WAN NIC and you got it ...

Wireless NW can be accessed across walls however each wall will reduce its range of access by 60% to 30%.  Try to place your router close to the place where you frequently access the wireless NW.  You could increase the range by adding small antennae or have wireless extension points within your house.
