Qatar has always been known as a country that promotes and encourages the pursuit of artistic excellence.

The existence of several international art galleries, including those at the Katara Cultural Village and the Doha Fire Station, underlines this fact quite nicely.

The Doha Fire Station, which is one of the most recognisable art landmarks in Qatar, recently turned into a beehive of creative activity as 147 artists, from as many as 58 nations, descended upon it for the Qatar International Art Festival (QIAF) 2018, an event organized by MAPS Interntional.

QIAF 2018, the biggest-of-its-kind art festival in Qatar, opened with an exhibition of the best works of participating artists at the Doha Fire Station’s Gallery Space. More than 150 artworks were on display.

The presence of artists from nations like Costa Rica, South Korea, China and Japan nicely highlighted QIAF 2018’s universal appeal.

The Doha Fire Station buzzed with raw creative energy as artists showcased their unique styles, in different mediums, leading to applause and admiration from those gathered around.

Organisers had received a total of 292 applications for this year’s QIAF, from which they selected the final 147. The event has been conceptualised as a cultural platform for people from different countries to learn about Qatar, which is all set to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

The participants were taken on a country-wide tour covering iconic cultural locations such as the Museum of Islamic Art, Katara Cultural Village, Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art, Souq Waqif, Doha Corniche and The Pearl Qatar, among others.

The event featured an art panel discussion as well as six master classes, conducted by the most experienced artists from among the participants.

While QIAF 2018 is done and dusted, be sure to mark your calendars well in advance for next year’s event. If you are an art connoisseur, then this is one event you simply cannot afford to miss.
