iPhone Lost - Any way to find it?

I lost my iPhone 3G while i was travelling abroad (my home city) last week. No tracking application was installed on that set. and currently the phone is switched-off. or might be the SIM is changed. is there any way to track/ locate that set? I would be very appriciated if anyone can give some idea.

It is very hard to locate the phones in most of the Asian countries. Thousands of phones are lost but no tracing, as they can do anything to the software and hardware.
