Beaches Get a Facelift
The Ministry of Municipality and Urban Planning has beautified and revamped a number of beaches in Qatar ahead of the Eid holidays. An official at the ministry told Qatar News Agency that sun-shade umbrellas had been installed at the beaches as part of beautification drive. Also, the ministry has undertaken a beautification drive on some of the islands which are frequented by people during weekends and holidays. - Gulf Times (16th Sep. 2009).
Does anyone know, which beaches?
where are these Islands??? How to get there?
I hope it is BANANA Island.
Ok so where is Safliya Island and how does one get there?
Wakra is a mess. With the end of Ramadan the shore and beach has become a dumping ground for those too lazy to walk a couple of steps to the industrial sized dumpster to deposit their trash.
No wonder people look at me like I'm nuts when I "pick up" after my dog when I go there. I was always taught "you brought it, you dispose of it properly." They can't even be bothered to pick up their empty soda and drinks bottles - goodness knows they bring them in plastic bags that could be used to transport the trash back to the dumpster provided. Nope, let's just drop everything where we stand - it will "go away".
Qatar will never become a tourist destination(unless you just want to see 5* hotels, which all look alike IMHO - and someone else is paid to pick up the trash) until and unless it becomes more like Oman (which really IS serious about trying to attract more tourism dollars) where the locals make an effort to keep their country clean.
I'm not saying Oman is perfect but it's really evident when you travel in that country that the residents take pride in their country. You don't see that here very often.
Perhaps more dumpsters (and emptying them daily - perhaps more on weekends and holidays) in the Wakra beach area and signs in various languages telling people to pick up after themselves (along with the $$ penalties for littering) could help alleviate some of the problem.
Which government department would be the point of contact for such a suggestion - does anyone know?

All well-maintained beaches are with expensive clubs and hotels......
What is govt doing in this regard? If I compare beaches of Kuwait with Qatar, there is hell of difference....
yaaa,... nice Umbrellas, but sorry, th beach is ugly.
I think beautification need much more than umbrellas,... :(
sorry, but I feel bored and don't know what to do in the coming holidays,..!! I wish to do sthng different this time,..
hmmmm

@andinewnham
Thnx for sharing. How to reach there?
That beach is Safilya Island. I was there last weekend.
Is that Ghariya?
is this some kind parkin area or wat?
Its awsome if they make Wakra & Umsaaid also look like this.. but I guess the snap is of one of the island.
I saw those umbrellas in sealine......
wonder ful...........umbrella
it doesn't have waves so it's not a beach.
So, it's definitely not Wakra.
Probably West Bay, Sealine, and that island off the corniche [ NOT Banana/Palmtree Island ].
