Desert Stars

By rbabb

Hello;

I am looking for like minded people who would enjoy the occasional excursion to the desert for a few hours after dark on the weekends to enjoy the stars in the night sky, un-poluted by the city lights.
I have a telescope that I take and I have practiced astronomy as a hobby for many years back in Canada.
I have only started up my hobby here about a month ago and have gone out Salwa road for about a 45 minute drive to a spot that is reasonably dark two times thus far.
I have two other Indian couples and one other Canadian couple who have gone with me and we have enjoyed the experience very much.
If any of you reading this would like to come along some time you would be most welcome.
I hope to to go out this comming weekend either Friday but more likely Saturday evening.
Drop me an email if interested.

Regards,
Robert

Yep, still here, last observing session was a great bit of fun, a bit hot though, but the sky out in the desert is still as beautiful as ever and the desert at night is beautiful to boot.

We meet for coffee every so often for a chat, please feel free to contact me if you're interested.

I will be setting up my scope tomorrow night Friday May 21, on the roof of the building where I live.

With the Moon in first quarter it's brightness washes out many of the faint "deep sky objects" like galaxies, star clusters and nebula so I won't bother to go out of the city to the desert until later in the month.

However you can see the Moon and Saturn and a few of the brighter stars and double stars almost as good from here in the light polution of Doha because of their own brightness.

So, if anyone reading this would like to take a look at the Moon with it's craters and Saturn with it's rings, and maybe a couple of stars and double stars by all means give me a ring on my mobile for directions.

611-5129.

Astro

Yes I seem to be unable to get my dates straight!

Friday 14th it is.

Not sure how many are interested in going out this time around but no matter, it varies, so anyone interested can give me a call at 611-5129.

Itinerary:

The time to meet up will be 7:00 p.m. at Ramada parking lot. Then we proceed out Salwa Road for 20 or so Km and side road for about 10km.

Off road into desert 150 meters or so, no problen for a car.

Takes about 45 minutes to get there.

Hello again, I feel I am posting to myself here sometimes but I know a few folks were interested who never got a chance to get out because of other commitments so here goes again.

Next session this coming Friday evening May 13th I think that is.

Again either drop me an email with your mobile or check here for an update on Friday afternoon for more details on how to meet up at a common area in Doha to proceed together by following my car to one of my observing sites.

I plan to go out this evening May 7th 2010 to have an observing session out in the desert. I plan to leave by 7:00pm.

Anyone wishing to come along is more than welcome to follow behind my car.

The location is out Salwa road about 40 km then a side road for about 10Km.

This area is far enough out to leave much of the light polution behind.

Folding chairs are great to take and of course bottled drink. Some have taken snacks as well.

Take an extra blanket or clothing as it often gets a little chilly.

Those who respond can call my cell, 6115129 and we'll arrange a location to meet to hook up and travel together.

I think that's it, except prey for clear sky!

Hello,

For those who are following this topic, I hope to take an outing to the desert May 7th.

The Folks at Qatar living have not gotten around as yet to posting the new Group Qatar Amateur Astronomy so I'll have to continue posting notices here.

Let's hope for clear sky on the 7th and I hope to see comments in reply of this post.

Well, fine timing for the Qatar living web site to take a break!

Obviously I could not update this forum with info about an astronomy outing to the desert Friday evening past.

Oh well Friday was cloudy anyhow.

The next time I will have a chance will be May 7th as I am heading out of Dodge for a vacation.

If you can please mark that date on your calandar and check back on this forum.

You might also check under the Groups heading "Qatar Amateur Astronomy" which has been sanctioned by the Qatar Living folks but is still in the making.

Yes,I do plan to go out to the desert on the 9th.

Tonight April 2nd, will only be for the moon, Mars and Saturn.

You'll only miss the moon on the 9th but we'll see several other objects such as galaxys, star clusters and nebulas in place of that.

Keep checking back for update

We are out of the country this weekend and were so looking forward to coming over on the 9th. Are you going to do it again on that date?

Hello,

If any of you are tuned in, I plan to set up my telescope tomorrow evening on my rooftop here in Mansoura.

From here in Doha, there is much less to see in the sky when compared to out in the desert.

However Mars and Saturn manage to shine through the light polution and the moon will make an appearance by 10:30pm.

I plan to begin at about 8:00pm.

Please call me at 611-5129 and I can give you directions to my building.

Regards,

Robert

Hi, I plan to set up this evening March 26th on the roof top of my apartment building.

There is a significant portion of the moon in the sky and this condition makes it pointless to go into the desert.

The desert sky is best on a moonless night so the next desert outing will not be until Friday night April 9th.

If you are interested in taking a look at the moon, Mars and Saturn drop me an email, and include your mobile # and I'll call you to confirm and give directions.

Hello all, Looks like there is some interest here after all.

I'm not quite sure how to proceed but it will be next weekend before I could put off an evening observing session, so I have a few days to decide how best to direct those of you who are interested and in a position to partake of my offer.

Please check back for further direction later in the week.

Cheers

Looks like I'll have to cancel out this weekend, the transportation I use for my scope gear is not available. However you'll see me post here again under Desert Stars hopefully for next weekend.

If you are serious about wanting to take a look at what can be seen I can still set up on my rooftop here in Doha where I can still view a couple of the planets and the moon.

Reply if interested to

We have not decided if it will be Thursday or Friday evening yet, did I say Saturday evening in my post? in any case I'll keep you informed, and then we can discuss the details of how to meet for the drive out.
