QUITE INFORMATIVE

- Over 100 pesticide ingredients are suspected to cause birth defects, cancer, and gene mutations.

- Every ton of recycled office paper saves 380 gallons of oil.

- Energy saved from one recycled aluminum can, will operate a TV set for 3 hours, and is equal to half a can of gasoline.

- Glass produced from recycled glass instead of raw materials reduces related air pollution by 20%, and water pollution by 50%.

- Homeowners use up to 10 times more toxic chemicals per acre than farmers.

- By turning down your central heating thermostat one degree, fuel consumption is cut by as much as 10%.

- One ton of carbon dioxide released into the air can be avoided by replacing a 75 watt light bulb with an energy efficient bulb.

- Everyday 50-100 species of plants and animals become extinct as their habitats are destroyed by human influence.

- The Earth has been around for 4.6 billion years. Scaling this time down to 46 years we have been around for 4 hours and our Industrial Revolution began just 1 minute ago. During this short time period we have ransacked the planet for ways to get fuels and raw materials, have been the cause of extinction of an unthinkable amount of plants and animals, and have multiplied our population to that of a plague.

- Already over half of the world's tropical forests have been lost.

- Every year approximately four billion tons of carbon accumulates in the air each year, about 30% of this comes directly from the continued burning of the rainforests.

- The Grasslands cover one-fifth of the land on Earth.

deepb, I am not calling names. Trust me I am cultured enough not to do such things. I respect people but as you know it is always reciprocal. I do understand what this is about, however I do believe anything like this should be posted with the reference.

Alinaz you should just cite your source that's all. You won't get such comments.

Sure there might be a difference in this gap. I really hope it didn't go from 40% to 20% in a matter of decade though. Do you have any source to cite the current figures?

Mathboy, name calling just makes you look bad and doesn't prove anything.

I respect the sources you have provided here but both of the surveys made are pretty older (1999) & (2001), respectively. There is a long gap found of 9 - 10 years. I believe, its pretty much period for such difference found.

Its not demoralising - I would REALLY like to use this info in class but i can't if i don't have the cited source... it wouldn't be very professional of me.

OK some are copied and pasted from here:

http://www.lbl.gov/ehs/waste/green_team/knowart.shtml

but they don't cite their source

and from here: The oman green awards:

Who both seem to be getting their info from here:

No not at all - you told me the time and location of an event.

Your information is interesting and I would love to use it in class but of course I can't unless I know the source of the info. Otherwise it won't be valid.

Yep the statistic for grassland covering one-fifth of the earth looks inaccurate. It's more like two-fifths. Here are a few sources -

http://www.wri.org/publication/content/8269

http://www.pbs.org/journeytoplanetearth/stateoftheplanet/grasslands.html

Africa is covered nearly 50% by grasslands. Just because it's lesser in a few countries does not mean the world percentage will be vastly effected.

The information I did share here shall be the key words & initiatives of Doha Green Summit which shall be held on April 11 in Grand Hyatt Hotel. My organization BQDRI & QGBC (Qatar Green Building Council) shall be supervising the summit.

I believe above information calms your enquiry.

I dont need to Google grassland data. I have been involved in trying to save grasslands in my home past 20 years. If onefifth of the earth is grasslands what the hell were we fighting for??

''The Grasslands cover one-fifth of the land on Earth.'''

I dont know what to say about this. As part of an environment protection group back home where we are losing grasslands every year and we are fighting for its survival
