Is it just 48 Degrees Today?

Was the highest temperature just 48 Degrees Celsius today? I doubt. I've been looking at the other online weather guides and some of them tells me that the highest would only be 36C or 97F. There must be something wrong with how they get their temperatures as it is impossible that the highest temp. now would just be 37C. At least the meteorologists in Qatar gave a more acceptable reading...

The Peninsula - The expected maximum temperature today also is 48 degrees Celsius while the minimum is likely to be 30 degrees Celsius — one degree higher than yesterday.

Ahh.. and it's just the start of summer. This might be one of the hottest summers I've experienced in 10 years of being in the Middle East. Shouldn't the Government impose a law that anything higher than 48C would mean suspension of work? That 118F! Man, a lot of people could die of the heat wave. Imagine all those workers who stand under the sun the whole day. I wouldn't want to be in their shoes. This is one of the reasons why they should implement a "No Work" Policy when temperatures reach that high. It's just inhumane. And from the looks of it, the Government doesn't care at the moment. It's been 3 days that we've been experiencing this heat and they should have reacted the 2nd day. I also wouldn't  want to think that Qatar Meteorologists would limit their readings to less than 50C so to give comfort to us nor for blue-collared workers not to stop their work. In any case, the Government should give more focus on these things especially when summer comes in. I do hope we get some relief in the coming days. The heat makes me eager to start our vacation in the Philippines more than ever!

v live at wakra, construction work is going on,my son come back from school on 2.30 am and daily i see many laborers busy in making road .many times they beg water from me .there was no shade for relaxing ,they work direct under the sun.i cant do something for them.really i feel shame on me and every human being for this double standard.we are passing our time in a/c while some poor laborer are working hard under the sun.

The law is that when the Temperature is high from June to August the Labourers are only given time off, if their works involves working directly under the sun, not is the Shade.

You're right, there should be far stricter guidelines covering a much larger time frame. And the existing guidelines should be enforced better.

But hey, at least it's better than you originally thought! Now you can update your blog with the new info!

Thanks tallg.

"Work will be banned in open-air locations between 11:30 a.m. and 3 p.m.

The amended working hours are expected to be enforced throughout July and August."

So the policy only gets to be enforced on June 15 to August 15? Hope they change that and enforce it sooner than later. Or they should have implemented it yesterday and today or when temps reaches 48C. If it reaches 48C at anytime of the day, they should suspend work for those staying under the sun.

Thermometer was indicating 48 in my car. That was at around 10 in the morning. Thought for a while it is the engine temperature :)

Mind you. This is the temp in the shade. Tan maniacs you have all the free resources now. Watch out for skin cancer

Quick search for summer work hours on QL;

http://www.qatarliving.com/node/18759

http://www.qatarliving.com/answers/living-in-qatar/summer-working-hours

I'm sure there are more.

That search also turned up all the threads that appear every year, saying how much hotter that summer is than all the previous ones :)

Actually, if I recall correctly, for a couple of months during summer there is mandatory "no work" time during the peak hours of the day, where no work should be done outside regardless of the temperature.

Yes, if they really do implement the policy of "no Work" on 50C, then I think Qatar should have had holidays the last 2 days. Then again, if the meteorologists say that it is less than 50C, what do you do. If it's 49.8C, what do we do? There should be at least 2 degrees allowance - 48C. If I stay outside for 1 minute under 48C, I'm sure your body temperature increases every second you're out there. So why wait for 48C to become 50C?

Also, have there been instances in the last 4 years that we've had 50C? And if the "policy" have been implemented? Or does this apply only to those who have blue-collared jobs?

The "no work" policy is mentioned in the newspapers every year. And each year they seem to get a bit better at policing it as well.

Obviously it only applies to those working outside.

Does this affect the hiring policies of several companies in Qatar? I heard from a friend that some companies freeze their hirings every summer until the end of Ramadam...
