Mowasalat drops plan to allow private taxi firms
Source ::: THE PENINSULA http://www.thepeninsulaqatar.com/Display_news.asp?section=Local_News&mon...

Mowasalat has shelved its plans to allow private companies to operate taxis since no company was ready to take up the responsibility, a senior official of the company said yesterday.

“All the companies that had initially come forward to operate the taxis had withdrawn later. We have already frozen the proposal. We are now planning to expand our own fleet of taxis, to meet the future requirements of the country,” Ahmed Al Ansari, business development director of Mowasalsat told The Peninsula. He said the first automated car parking facility in Qatar, currently under construction in the Mowalalat premises will be ready soon. The first phase of the Karwa City project is expected to be completed next year. Mowasalt is planning to introduce more double-decker buses in the streets of Doha after the successful launch of the first five buses. Some of the new buses are with open roof to cater to the tourists, said Al Ansari.

Let's see now...

a)The companies that did come forward most likely couldn't agree to Mowasalat's terms
b) expand to meet future requirements? They need to expand to meet the CURRENT requirements!
c) open top buses for tourists .... who won't come cos they can't get a drink :o(

Talking of renting the taxis to private firms. They are already doing this they rent the taxis to the poor drivers who have to pay QR265 per day to the Mowasalat. If they earn more it stays with them and if they earn less they have to make the difference from their own pocket. No wonder the Drivers are not bothered about the average person on the road waiting for the taxis.

As I discovered this morning no Taxi driver was willing to take me back from the Industrial area to Westbay to my office as they were more interested in offering a shuttle service for the people in the Industrail Area and making easy money and charging per person rather than what was on the meter..

On the line of having radio's, the drivers arnt being motivated enough to bother...put ur self in their place driving on these roads with this heavy traffic all day long. Get the picture?

the radio would allow direct communication with their drivers, allowing them to re-direct (empty) cabs to the callers. this is why i think they can't send a cab at short notice.

to top that, karwa does not allow advance booking of earlier than 24 hours. the other day when i had to take a taxi from the industrial area, i saw many taxis parked in their depot (and they are not for maintenance!). it appears to me either they don't have enough drivers or they are not managing the system well.

what's new ?!!??

Perhaps they are going about it the wrong way. Instead of getting other private companies to set up their own taxis, Mowasalat should rent out their taxis to private companies to run. This way Mowasalat still owns the taxi business but the management will be diverse. Just a thought.

as mjamille correctly pointed out, what "fleet" is this guy talking about???...the public transport network in this country is pathetic...& that's putting it very mildly...they're not short of money as it's a 100% Govt. enterprise,so somebody please tell me why there is NEVER a taxi available for the next 6 hours at least when someone needs one right now???...

"We are now planning to expand our own fleet of taxis, to meet the future requirements of the country"

Yeah, more taxi is required...not in the future, not later, but NOW! they should have'd provided enough taxi's before they faced out the orange taxis.

mowasalat is full of guiness bu**shit!

Qatar is turning out to be the laughing-stock amongst a lot of other things. I wonder who is actually running this country with all these stupid rules? Do they actually think they are progressing? These people will learn a lesson very soon. Just wait and watch Qatar a few more of these good moves bravo :P

Coming to the point of it all. This sounds like a big conspiracy to have a monopoly over the taxi situations in Qatar. I dont buy that ALL the companies withdrew. Something fishy here.

On the 5 mins rest they get every two years they gaze up and wonder at the magnificent city center wondering if they can ever get inside....

as B2D pointed "a)The companies that did come forward most likely couldn't agree to Mowasalat's terms"

That seems to be the obvious reason.
