...and what you've described is only the tip of the ice berg about the owner who only cares about making profit, is not an educator and has been sued in courts for racism, sexism, work place bullying and labour abuse at least three times.

So glad to read that parents are finally removing their children out of that con artist place. This place has nothing to do with the UK, London or anything else.

The owner is an Arab, originally from a remote village, with no real care for children and their education but plenty of interest in making money at the expense of others.

Obviously you do not understand the curriculum if this is your stance on the school. ISL-Qatar runs on the IB programme which if you knew anything you would understand is learner centred. Which contradicts your comment about the school not being focussed on the learner.

As for learning something useful, that depends on your take on what is useful. Did you want your children to memorise facts? Yes, then no ISL is not the school for you. Did you want your child to understand the deeper concepts behind, to be able to think critically and reflect on their learning? Yes, then ISL is the school for your child.

As for your statement about students leaving that may be the case but you should also be looking at staff movements. Are teachers changing every two years or are they remaining consistent? If the teachers are leaving it is cause for concern because they know something you may not. Having said that the only people I know leaving the school are leaving for Sherbourne because they wanted British Curriculum not International but were very happy with the school for the time they were there.

Before making grand sweeping statements perhaps acknowledge that the school was not for you but that the extensive waiting list says otherwise. The school has an international student body, and challenging curriculum. It may not be your ideal school but let people make their own judgements rather than being bitter in a public forum.

Thank you Mrs P. Unfortunately, I have heard similar stories from so many parents. I wish for the sake of the children and families the SEC would get more directly involved. Although I and told that intervention from the SEC is likely sooner rather than later.

Newton schools are a scam!!I am not interested in any propaganda, or mud slinging here on this site. I only wish to inform the public of my horrible experience at Newton.

After being assured that there is indeed place available in year 1 for my daughter, we paid the enterance test and subjected my little girl to an enterance test. The teacher testing her had a thick accent which I am certain my little girl would have had difficulty understanding, having not been exposed to the different accents of the world.

After the test I was told by said teacher that my child had done well and tried hard. We were informed that we would be contactedbe the school shortly. I waited a week, with my child waiting paitently to start school. After many calls and e-mails, we were informed that she had not passed her test and was refused addmitance.

We then requested a retest as we personally know of a friend's daughter who was tested for the wrong year, and were promptly refused a second chance. We were not furnished with the actual results of the test nor were we given the test paper or the option of me sitting in on the test to assist the child with feeling at ease or explaining instructions due to the child not understanding the accent. I myself am a teacher with 9 years of experience and would have been able to assist my child with understanding the instructions.

We have had the most appalling experience with Newton and my darling child, at a mere 6 years of age, is left feeling as if she is lacking in some way. She is a bright, vivacious child who had only had 2 months of grade one back home before coming to Doha. This was not even considered in the decision making process.

We were one of about 20 children on the afternoon, writing the entrance test, and i am sure my child is not the only one to have been devestated by the results of said test. Parents are desperate when they go to Newton and the school sees this desperation and uses it as an easy way to make money from these so called 'enterance tests'.

I firmly believe that it is also the colour of our skin that impacted on the severely lack of assistance and empathy we recieved from Newton British School. Indians are considered the workforce in this country and it difficult being a South African Indian here in Doha as you are judged by your outside appearance rather than your intellectual ability and academic accomplishments. Newton treated my family with a definate disregard and a degree of racism. If we had not been an 'Indian' family, the outcome would surely have been different.

Please, stay away from this school. There are other options available. Look around and you will find them. There is Cedars School, Loydence Academy and a few other new schools that are transparent and put the child first, which is ultimately what education should be about. The CHILD!! Not lining your pockets....

well how the hell did it manage that? With complete idiots running it, a key stage leader who is so unebelievably RUDE to everyone, she should be sacked immediately, an ex-con for a sports teacher who definitely should NOT be in the teaching profession not surprising he is not allowed to teach anywhere in the UK.

They must have paid them a large amount of Qatari rials.

TFS. Reads like a sales brochure. Sadly for the parents involved I wish the practices in the school met such expectations.

btw such a high turnover is alarming. Not the same at other schools.

Okay fair enough FORMER parents on QL have written negatively about NIS i.e. from 2007(apart from the member on this thread). A LOT has changed since then, like a the rebuilding of the West bay school and a brand new school being built in Lagoon. Also the teachers will not be the same as the ones from 2007.

The qualifications of teachers now are mainly from England and Scotland, some from Canada and South Africa.

The schools I believe are run for profit and I don't know the exact percentage that goes back into the schools. What I do know is that we have enough quality resources to teach above and beyond; including smart boards, over head projectors, a computer in each class, all textbooks for each subject etc...

There are so many nationalities in the schools and each school differs. The British school has less Qataris than D-ring, Lagoon and Westbay. Nationalities range from Egyptian, Syrian, Spanish, French, Malaysian, British, African, Qatari and Palestinian. All students at British can speak English fluently, (except some of the babies who are going into pre-school). In the other schools, more children do not speak fluent English.

The new Lagoon school is completely purpose built and is a beautiful school and very big, with football pitches, volleyball and basketball courts. The British school and west bay were not purpose built but both have a playground, a gym and a swimming pool. D-ring is also purpose built but is not as big as Lagoon.

Extra curricular activities, ran by teachers, are on every term in 6 week blocks. NIS has also been involved for the last 2years in the international competition of 'Rock Challenge' and has competed against other international schools and have won 2years in a row.

The large growth was the reason for a fourth school to be build to accommodate all children.

Teacher turnover rate is quite high as the contract is two years. Most teachers are young and want to travel to other countries. In saying that this will be my 3rd year here but like other teachers, after next year it will probably be my last as I want to travel. There are teachers who are on their 6th and 7th years at NIS (including 2 of the principals) and 3 teachers at my school are going onto their 4th year teaching at NIS.

I hope I have answered all your questions adequately!

Man I should be on commission...seriously! :P

I am simply mentioning what has appeared on QL from other parents and what I have heard from FORMER parents.

If these issues have all been addressed, I am anxious to learn about it. As I am sure other parents on QL that are looking for spaces at this late stage are also.

For example, these are the questions and complaints I have seen regularly on QL and heard from parents at Newton schools.

Are the qualifications for teacher all from England or from other countries also?

Is the school for profit or is it nonprofit? If for profit, how much of the fees go back to the school for education and running of the school?

What nationalities are at the school generally? Are most students native speakers of English?

Are the facilities good. Do you have proper gymnasium, pool, after school sports teams, etc.?

You mentioned high growth in the last two years. Where is the space for this? Are the schools purpose-built?

What is the teacher turnover rate? Have many teachers been there more the a few years?

This is your chance to correct the supposedly false image of your school.

By Missteacher• 22 Apr 2012 11:40
Missteacher

Have you experienced these issues yourself 2020 Olympics?

Please answer/discuss the following points;

Teachers not listening to what??....to parents go on about how they are not happy that their child has not got the same abilities as the rest of the class, or top group or even their siblings. or what? please explain.

I am qualified and have the certificates to prove it and so have all the teachers I work with or they would not be employed. Do think I would be happy getting paid the same as people who have not studied/trained to teach children.

Admin deal with the cost of the schools and yes to put your child in a private school you do need to pay for it. Money goes to buying resources to teach our children.

By 2020 Olympics• 22 Apr 2012 10:42
2020 Olympics

What about all the parents' complaints about teachers not listening or not being qualified and admin being all about making money? Have these issues been resolved?

Yes and as I have said before, there are 4 schools opened now. One of which only opened a few years ago. I started with 12 children and this year I started with 22. Now their are more classes of the same year group to accommodate all the children. The school is getting bigger and better each year. Now if the school is that bad, how can this be possible.

Yes there have been a few disgruntled parents, as there will be with any school. Reasons can spring from their their child didn't get 100% in their exams and parents misunderstanding that their child simply has not got the same abilities as their younger or older siblings.

I agree with newnew and carminaburana. DESS and Doha College are very good schools. They are mixed and follow a British curriculum. For international curriculum consider Compass or Sherborne. Avoid Newtons schools at all costs--listen to parents' comments not the views of its employees being posted on the thread.

Regardless, it is always best to visit the school before applying even if will mean you will need to make an extra trip to Qatar before permanent arrival.

Spaces will be few at this point, so be prepared to accept second or third choice and reapply next year for the waiting list.

Honestly, One of the worst schools i have ever seen not just in Doha, but world wide. Not a learner place, but rather a place for kids to kill time. It looks organized, but kids learn nothing usefull at that school.

The international school of london is one of most expensive schools in Doha and yet the worst by far. Everyone i know attending the international school of London in Doha is about to leave the school.

Poor education and a total waste our kids time to send them to this school. Stay away of this school and try other ones. Such as Global, Doha College, DESS.

We and our friends had a terrible experience in regards to learning. Some of us managed to send the kids to other school and some are looking for places for their kids.

I am not a blogger but I have seen this thread, and I think you should know only go for DESS and Doha College.

Not any more but 2 years ago I would have recommended DMBS too, but beware all stay away from it now!

Doha Montessori and British School has changed it's name to Doha British School because the staff had nick named it, Dodgy Management Bully Staff, so the management wanted to take their name out!

But take this advice for what it is worth from someone who knows, management has been taken over by the third reich! There are new management people in place who are; racist, bullies, unqualified and immoral, you do not want these people looking after your children.

I am a parent who will be taking his children out of there this year after a friend who works there told me exactly what is going on.

Also I know cases are going to court with management due to ...better not to say till judges speaks.
