Dukhan

Hi everbody,

Counting down the days to my arrival in Qatar - due to arrive 2nd April. I've been reading a number of the topics but have noticed everyone seems to be located in and around Doha.

Is there anybody from Dukhan which is where I shall be working (for Qatar Petroleum)?? What's it like?? I've heard it's very peaceful and quiet - and very safe for children. We have 3 children (2 girls aged 5 and 4 and a boy aged 3).

The girls will be going to Dukhan English School - anybody got any experience of that school?? Good or bad.

I know Dukhan is about 90km from Doha - how long will that take in hours and minutes?? What's the social scene like in Dukhan?? Is there much by way of amenities??

Any replies/opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Looking forward to joining you all in April!!!!

Glad to hear you are settling in well.

Dukhan Recreation Club I presume?

That's probably the one.

The Beach Club is good too, especially for the kids.

I will be surprised if you don't make friends very quickly in Dukhan. Try visiting the golf club, the beach or the social club (can't remember it's name).

are inside the compound as far as I know. There may be some outside but I don't know.

Although I never worked there, I'm sure you will enjoy Dukhan and it's social life.

Am pretty sure the accommodation is free but not sure about utilities, they used to be free many years ago due to the lack of meters but someone else is bound to answer that together with your other questions.

If they don't,contact your parent company (if you are being transferred) or QP direct.

Good day

I have got a job offer from QP, apparently to be moved over Dukhan. I wonder if there are offices inside the compound as well or compound is strictly residential.

How's the dressing code for women in Dukhan or Doha? is there any rental fees for the house or utilities to be paid per month?

I have read above, in a 2007 email, there is a highway under construction Dukhan-Doha, is it finish?

Is there anyone working for a drilling department who can offer me some details of the working facilities and environment in QP?

Thanks to all

Simon

Hi Doragouveia,

have been in dukhan for about 2 years now and have found it a very sociable place there is a toddler group every monday and a coffee morning every wednsday ( both in term time only) theres a familys buffet at the beach clud on tuesdays, darts, baingo, golf, the hash on a sunday if you like walking or running in the dessert (this is a good way to meet the party crowd!!!!).

There is also the womens assosiasion, a sewing club and

there are always people willing to look after the little one for an hour or two if you want to go out, i think there is a lady that dose a proper sitting sevice but i've not used her.

you really get back what you put into the life here if you get out and about you will make so many friend.

and dont worry to much about accommodation there are apartments held for teachers and there quite nice but you will have to wait for a villa!

hope this helps and i look forward to seeing you soon.

p.s. i have a 1 year old son and the locals are so lovely to him they really love kids here.

(sorry about the spelling)

Hey guys...Ive been in Dukhan for the past 17 years and my dad still works there and i always return to dukhan for my vacations and i say its the best place one can get to live! It has everything one needs from a school(British system till year 13) to a boat club! Its a very safe for children to grow up and it has a muticultural environment. There are get together parties (in recreation clubs)held once in a month, trips for children and as well adults, coaching classes(basketball, keyboard, bharathnatiyam, karate, swimming and many more). There's a cinema as well. Cultural nights,Annual Days, Handicraft Exibitions are all held when the whole of dukhan gets together and enjoys and all these days stays in the heart till the end. Dukhan also has a boat house, Sailing club,a golf course. It has supermarkets which provides most of the products u would need in daily life and u might need to go doha once in 2 or even 3 weeks if ur a frequent shopper. The best part of dukhan is the people living in Dukhan. The people of dukhan are really sweet and very very helpful and evryone gets along with each other. We live like a big happy family! The only problem in dukhan for now is the housing problems as many outsiders aer joining Qp Dukhan. But im sure this problem would be solved soon as the company is increasing the number of houses rapidly.I suggest to anyone live in dukhan! Its a lovely experience. Anyone gets a chance to live in dukhan or atleast visit dukhan then please go for it!!..or else u will regret!..Cheers

Hi all!

We are moving to Duckhan in the summer, not quite sure when, my husband is due to start work as an english teacher at the school.

I am a bit alarmed by the accomodation shortage you seem to be talking about. Is there a possibility that we will be put up in Doha and made to commute every day? this would be a nightmare! One of the reasons i have agreed to this move was to not have to drive for an hour every morning with a car full of 'excited' children!

WE will be talking t the agency about this, it has never been suggested to us that there would be a problem with finding suitable accomodation. We are a family of six...

Any suggestions?

Hello Guys,

I am expecting a call from QP and probably would be staying in Dukhan.

I would love to meet some of you who reside there. Going through the thread, it seems that its quite a nice and peaceful place. It would be fun sailing or playing golf on wekends..

Any suggestions from the old timers for me?

Hi Garydixon, I work in Dukhan but I don't live there, so I drive to work daily. At present there is a massive road work from Shahaniya to Dukhan (approx 40 km stretch). I used to spend 45 mins from and to Doha but because of the diversions, I'm spending an hour each way. I'm sure you and your family will love Dukhan as they have very nice facilities already mentioned above. Others not mentioned are the Dukhan Recreation Center that has state of the art gym with jacuzzi and sauna...Tennis (outdoor), basketball and volleyball courts (indoor and outdoor), football field are also available. Goodluck!

Hello Gary

I accepted a job with Qatar Petroleum as Senior Reliability Engineer a couple of months ago, went through the medical in the UK and I finally arrived on Wednesday. I am in the Ramada Hotel until tomorrow. I think I will be staying in temporary acommodation either in Doha or Dukhan for the first three months but was fobbed off by the HR people on Friday as they wanted to get home early. Ramadan is great.

I'm being patient at the moment but some info on what will be happening would be great just now.

Do you know if there are houses available in Dukhan?

How soon were you moved there or did you have to stay in Doha for a while.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Regards

Stuart Irvine ([email protected])

Hi Jaelee,

Thanks for the info - my e-mail address is [email protected]

I know that by the time my family arrive (probably end of July) we will have a house somewhere in Dukhan. But before that, for the 3 months I will be in Qatar on my own, I don't know where I will be staying. I'm not getting much info out of the job agency/QP. I hope it will be Dukhan so that I can get a feel for the place before my wife and kids arrive. Also, I wouldn't like to drive to/from Doha each day!!!

I was brought up in a village environment and although I did eventually get bored with it, it wasn't until I was ready to go to college. I would much prefer to bring my kids up in a village than a big city. So I think everything will be fine on that score - especially as there seems to be so many recreational activities to do. The kids are already excited about going to the pool each day - they associate that with being on holiday!!!

Any further info you have on Dukhan would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks, Jaelee.

Cheers,

Gary

Thanks for the confirmation that life in Dukhan is good.

There was a question asked earlier by chunk03 and little response.

I don't know if chunk03 is accepting e-mails but he too would like information on Dukhan.

Best regards.

This is the link to his post.

and love the life here. It is a small town, yes you do see the same people all the time .. but there is so much to offer in the way of family life and quality time. It's a very safe town to bring up children ... we have excellent sporting facilities and a few small shops to get the bare essentials. Although you will find you need to go to Doha to get a better variety .. we tend to shop fortnightly.

We are members of the golf club, beach club, Recreation Centre .. my husband sails, there is always something being organised in the way of social events. It can be a very busy place if you want it to be.

There is a ladies shopping bus going to Doha every weekday.

I lived in Doha about 6 years ago for 18 months and prefer Dukhan hands down.

If you are willing to provide your contact details I will email you with more info.

Have you been confirmed a house in Dukhan? There is a shortage at the moment. The Dukhan Doha road is a nightmare. Really try hard to confirm you have a house.

Good Luck. If you like small village life, then you will be fine. It's down to what you make it.

Whilst it is a bit like village life there are many Western staff in Dukhan who wouldn't move to Doha. Some have been there approximately 20 years. Regarding driving there every day. I appreciate that there is a motorway type road now but even then it will be a bind.

I drove over to Dukhan 3 times a week to play golf. It could not be more boring.

the problem living in QP compound in Dukhan you will meet the same people over and over again. You meet them in coffee morning, see them again at school pick up, then in the evening meet the same people at the pool, next you see them in the house party.

thats was the comment we heard from people living in Dukhan.

Dukhan Boat club is great ... they doing huge refurbishment in there ... My husband just putting his application for the club last week.

However ... in my opinion ... i don't think i can live in Dukhan. The place too quiet and not much things to do there. You should have a look at the place first and see wether your wife can settle there???

Some family living in Doha and the husband commuting daily to Dukhan. At the moment they building big highway Doha - Dukhan all the way, when it is ready it should cutting down the travelling time.

Good luck with your moving,

It's not a problem for QP staff to go into Dukhan. They live inside. I never had any problem getting in, just shouted "golf club" and waved my QP ID card if they ever challenged.

I hope you will not need to come to Doha. Dukhan is peaceful & has mountains. Ten years ago I discovered that there were foxes. I also noticed a wild rabbit. I think there is a historical building too near Dukhan. Maybe a prison.

Permission is needed to go inside the gates of the city.

Dukhan has great amenities.

Beach, Social Club, Sailing Club and sand Golf Course (Qatar's first and extended to 18 holes in 1995/96)

All the above are subsidised for QP staff.

The school is good, as is the social life
