English Schools

Please help.... I am hoping to move my family from the UK early January, however I need some advice on English Schools. I have children aged 14, 9 and 2. I have looked at some of the websites, however they don't seem to want to reply to e-mails. Can anyone advise on the following:

Which schools follow the English curriculum?
Which are the better English schools?
How do I go about getting information on availability of places??

Any help would be greatly appreciated...

Thanks

Try Sherbourne too

www.sherbourneqatar.org

we had the same problem when we moved no one seems to reply to emails and we came from new zealand so a prior visit wasn't posible

They did reply and they had spaces as they are a new school that only opened in september my daughter is 5 and really enjoys it there they have a good bus service too.

Park house wouldn't even put her on waiting list and not heard great reports on Newton but cant comment further as never even visited school

Good luck finding a school though I thought it would be really easy but it is'nt

I moved here just over 5 weeks ago and had set up schools for both my children 9 and 4 but am encountering problems. The amount of english kids in the classes leading to poor teaching and lack of freindsfor my daughter (aged9). We are now looking at changing her. Please feel free to contact me via email if u wish to give(i hope) usefull advice!! Claire x

Although my son goes to Newton, I think because QIS has a longer established history and did quite well in their IGCSE results this year, that might be your better choice. I think Newton is still learning as it goes.

I visted DESS and was very impressed. There have been quite a few comments about Newton school on this website.

Yes, Park House has a good reputation. Some schools in Doha are more "British" than others and "English-speaking" can mean just about anything.

The horrors of school waiting lists has been a perennial topic on this forum. Alas, the indications are that the problem is getting worse, not better. There are still schools that will not even give your child a place on the waiting list, never mind an actual place at the school!

For many schools, it helps if you have a British passport and heaps of cash. However, with many of the better schools being hopelessly oversubscribed, the temptation to put up the school fees yet again is almost irresistible.

You really need to visit Doha and look around the schools. I am moving in 2010 and have two children 4 and 11 - the upside to Dohas schools is that they goin all the way through from nursery to 6th form. some schools started as primaries and grew into secondaries and some did it the other way around.

Having seen three schools we have selected Park House - mainly because it was the most British and the teacher actually greeted us and talked to us. We felt they all cover the basics but it is the extras or lack of extras that you will find helps you make the decision.

We feel that there will be so much for the kids to do outside school so sports and activities seem to be fully available and top class.

Happy to give you more indepth views through personal mail like where we will live and who we work for. Good luck!

due to population growth pressure is on schools and they can afford to be picky. It is distressing that schools set up with British Embassy help for British kids have adopted a policy of excluding less able, or less financially secure British kids in favour of any of 57 different nationalities who work for Oil companies.

Best schools have traditionally been DIS, DESS for younger kids, Doha College for older kids. Many other schools are mushrooming and some are better than others.

Good luck!

There are plenty of schools that follow the English curriculum. For the age group of your two older children i would say Doha College, Park House or Doha Montessori Brtish School etc.

Please bear in mind just like back in the UK there is a waiting list system here also and add to that there is also entry tests. So better start applying well before you come here. There is a list of school data base posted on the bottom right hand side of this web page, which you may avail.

Good luck with your planned move, and hope all goes well for you and your family.
