You're correct abt the cute part scarlett:) But miriam they're extremly naughty and extremly playful and thrive on human interaction from their family and do not like to be left alone for extended periods of time. They're very intelligent- u'll be surprised by how intelligent they can be... Mine in particular is very very possessive which is good in one way but he makes a big fuss when we go out.

have you ever HAD a german shepard before? If not, then you might want to rethink wanting one...they are extremely strong willed dogs and only people who have had previous experience with them should own one..especially a puppy. That's the one main reason shelters end up with dogs as people think they are really cute puppies, but then for whatever reason, the darn thing grows into a DOG...imagine that...

So, again, please if you are familiar with this breed, then you know what I am talking about..if you are not, then I suggest you talk to one of the ladies who runs QAWS and see what kind of dog would be best for you and your family.

dog fighting can be even worse...pitbulls are illegal here but they "some how" make it and are bred here for fighting. Bad thing about them is that they have these jaw muscles that are many times stronger than a regular dog's jaw and once they bite down, its almost impossible to get them to release. You'll see dogs with their ears cropped so that the other dog can't get a good hold on them...those are almost always fighters. Don't know about here, but back home people would catch or steal stray dogs and use them as bait for training the fighting dogs...it was a death sentence for the poor dog. How human beings can do with with animals is beyond my comprehension. But then there's a lot of things that humans do that don't make any sense...even to each other.

Scarlet I know about cock fights. I've seen it on TV long time back. I think its a real pathetic thing to do. Was just not aware that they did it with dogs and that also in Qatar.

dog fighting is alive and well in Qatar, unfortunately. Dog's don't have to WANT to fight, those that don't like it or are sweet dogs can end up as bait dogs...used to train the fighting ones. Yes, it IS illegal here in Qatar, like it is most everywhere else in the world, but it still thrives as the ones who do it, either bribe officials to look the other way or are very good at hiding where they hold the fights, or both. Its a horrible way to treat animals...forced to fight until death or near fatal mutilation. Cock fighting is also another blood sport that is illegal...In those they train the roosters to be so aggressive that even if you confiscate the bird, you have to euthanize it because it can't be around other birds without attacking them. People also put razor sharp hooks on their feet so they can slash at each other when fighting. Horrible. This is such an issue worldwide but officials are trying their best to stop it...but like anything illegal is very good at getting away with it.

Please, this is not a problem just here in Qatar..its everywhere...so don't think I am specifically picking on this country. I know for a fact that in America, there are raids on a regular basis where the fighting animals are confiscated and the people who train and set up the fights end up doing prison time.

So what will they do if they get a german shepherd? I mean who will the dog fight with? We have a german shepherd puppy at home(in india) and hes a sweetheart. I dont think he's the fighting kind though... More like the eating and sleeping kind:)

I never understood the 'fashion' aspect of dogs. Get a mongrel/cross-bread/doha-special-mix. They live longer and have more character!

The demand for GSDs is partly because they're good for fighting, aren't they?

Just look at the pets group here, plenty of links to QAWS. Tallg, GSD highly fashionable this season, replacing the husky (last season) and the bulldog (sooo the season before). Sorry Sammi, your intentions may be entirely decent, but I encounter people everyday here who would be better off spending their money on a new handbag if they want to look good. They'd keep the bag longer than they keep the dogs.

First of all, don't. There are loads of homeless GSD cross breeds because people wanted to buy a designer dog but then couldn't cope with them. Go to the shelter and adopt a GSD x pup from them. If you were to buy a pure breed here (and it would be inbred), it would set you back at least 3,000QR. To have one imported, about 3500-5,000QR.
