Natural Childbirth...Home Birth?

Is this possible in Qatar? Are there midwifes that will attend a home birth?

Yes, they are definitely common in the U.S. One particular hospital in Houston would actually brag about their (very high) c-section rate on their tours. Eek. I know other doctors in the U.S. who will "work with patients" to find a "reason" for a scheduled c-section.

I have two friends here who were adamant about natural births, so much so that they did return to the U.S. for their births. Other friends have had natural births here, but the risk of "needing" a c-section is fairly high in Qatar from what I've seen.

It sounds like you have a great doctor in the U.S. - good find :)

be somebody you trust (really trust). But choosing risks in giving birth, doctor's knows best! At least you have someone to blame in case, rather than forever blaming yourself for something you take the risk at! IMHO!

C Sections are pretty common here in the US too so that isn't unusual. THere are a number of hospitals here in the US that have Csection rates of 50 percent. I had a natural hospital birth with my son but was lucky enough to have a doctor that supported that wish. Even when I was in transition and asked for pain killers she knew I really wanted to have him naturally and supported that wish.

Based on what you are telling me it would be better if I plan to have the next child in the US.

Thanks everone!! That helps make my decision easier!

I don't think that doctors necessarily "force" anything on women, but they definitely convince them that a c-section is necessary when it often is not. I'm definitely not saying that c-sections are 100% unnecessary - sometimes they truly are necessary to save the baby/mum.

However, often times the doctor uses a "reason" for the c-section that is not not medically valid. Mums buy into it because the doctor tells them it is necessary to save the baby, and you can't really blame the mums for doing what they're told in this case.

Statistically speaking, though, the c-section rate is more than double what it should be (per the WHO), so the chances are at least 50/50 that a woman's "emergency" c-section was actually unnecessary :(

When I had my son (in the UK), I opted for a homebirth and it was amazing up until I was taken to hospital due to very high blood pressure and had an emergency c-section. I would recommend a home birth all day long though, I was so relaxed in my own home in a birthing pool with the lights dimmed and my favourite music playing. I'd go home to have the baby if/when I have a second one.

Doctors can't FORCE anything on you. They need to your consent for things like epidurals, c-sections, episiotomies etc etc. If you want a natural birth, insist on one. Obviously medical complications may need medical intervention though.

On a related note, I definitely know some women who have had vag. births here, but I feel like I know many more women who have had so-called "emergency" c-sections. . .something to keep in mind in case you have the option to return home for the birth.

Yeah they do force you to take the epidural sometimes depends on the doctor who is attending your birth , Try to be firm if you dont want it even though they start nagging you about it .

Thanks Everyone! That helps to know. How about natural births? Do women have them or do they force epidurals on you?

It is possible but it's not legal.

Yes, home births are (unfortunately) illegal. However, sometimes women "accidentally" (ahem!) give birth at home. Midwives are not legally able to attend the births.

As far as I know it's illegal here.
