No Dryers; No dishwashers in Qatar!

engr2002
By engr2002

How come most villas and flats in Qatar have no Dryers and No dishwashers and even if you want to purchase them from Carrefour there is NO space and NO connection so I cannot hook up those items even if I were to place them in the living room :-)

I was shocked to learn this when I came here. It is not like dishwashers and dryers were invented last year!!! These are taken for granted almost everywhere throughout the world!!! I have had dishwashers and dryers 30 years ago! Yes, 30 years ago!!! Qatar seems to be unaware of these "luxury" items! Do they assume that because they have SUN people can airdry clothes!!! Do they assume that everybody has MAIDS to wash their dishes!

I for one dislike the idea of having a live-in maid! I think it is an invasion of privacy and it teaches parents to be LAZY and dependent. I do not trust strangers to raise my children. I am old fashioned enough to believe that Mom and Dad should raise their own children and clean the house and wash the dishes. I said Mom and Dad BOTH!

When you think that there are millions of people in this world without running water let alone a washer/dishwasher.

Stop moaning and be thankful you live in a lovely safe country and have a roof over your head.

dishwasher and dryers are really common things.

But did anyone from you thought of buying Food Waste Disposers? Are you people aware of it, it's simply an amazing thing and am having really good benefits of using this product.

Is anyone from you know or using Food Waste Disposer or Garbage Disposers? If NO then check the information about this product on www.insinkerator.co.uk

well. stop longing for seattle. If you are so attached. Take the chip off you shoulder and call it quits.

About Abudhabi. I like it twice as much as qatar. It's got the early 90's qatar touch when it comes to local culture. The locals are twice as mature as qatari counterparts when it comes to socio-cultural interaction. Traffic doesnt choke in early mornings. The city was built with scalability in mind.

abudhabi has invested in so much more than just glass, iron and bricks. They are the true modern arabs.

About Aisha-Taweela....Not everyone can afford a maid. I know Whinging about dishwasher outlets is lame(engr2002). Then again... Look at the bright side. The Whinger gets to keep the QL point. The haul is not very dissapointing seeing how vociferous the whinger is.

bleu - I can understand your frustrations, but these preconceived notions have to start somewhere ;p

Engr2002 - you do appear to have a large chip on your shoulder about many aspects of Qatar and Qataris. I'm intrigued as to why you decided to start out just ranting about dryers and dishwashers? Did you think you'd test the water first before spewing out the real hatred inside you?

Amoud, I sure am pulling everybody's legs. I'm just frustrated. Nobody is allowed to single-out any nationality here in QL, except for the Qataris. We're DIRECTLY blamed for everything.

Anybody who reads QL would get the impression that we are

Uneducated.

Barbarians.

Stupid.

Greedy.

And so much more!!!

It seems many expats come here with a preconceived notion of how we are, and tries to find evidence to prove themselves right. A single incident or ten, or a hundred are enough to paint all the Qataris with a very broad brush.

engr2002, you seem to have a problem with us Qataris, every time you say something different.

Let me be straight with you:

I will drive however I want and nobody is going to TEACH ME anything about driving or anything else ...

When I'm in my white landcruiser you will see me drive in the sand, rocks, rain puddles just to avoid waiting for you.

When you are driving slowly (anything less than whatever speed I want to drive at), I'll tailgate you and flash you with the highest beam available until you get out of the way.

We don't care about fines and points. We will not change, and you have to live with that. We are also offended when expats drive like we do.

By engr2002• 30 Dec 2008 12:14
engr2002

At the request of wol1, I will make next post about driving. I will mention that I didn't see rude landcruisers in UAE at all. What makes Qatar so special? Who invented this ill behavior of very rude tailgating (a traffic violation in civilized nations) with flashing high-beams?

I wish they learn about the 3-second rule and keeping safe distance between cars. No wonder I see deadly accidents all the time. Isn't that more needed than slapping 3 points for parking violations which are not "moving violations" and thus nobody slaps points for that! After all parking is not a TRAFFIC crime (I noticed they refer to traffic violations as crimes in official documents!!!).

Excuse me, a "maroon?" As in the colour? Now that is funny. Perhaps you meant "moron?" I see you need English lessons from one of "those" English teachers? And, my dear, engineers are a dime a dozen in Qatar so what makes you so special? Better not to blasphemize another person's profession when it is obvious you could benefit from it. Maybe you could find a dictionary and look up the meaning of git and realise it isn't specifically used by English professors.

engr2000,

I have lived in 3 places and all came with dishwashers. My employer made it mandatory with the landlords. If you don't have one then it is your employer that did not negotiate it properly. The landlords here are no different than the worst slum landlords back home. Nothing is purchased, nothing is done and if it is then it is the cheapest and at the bare minimum. The beds the landlords supply for example are the worst I have ever used. It is disgraceful to be sure but once you understand this your brief stay here in terms of your working life will be manageable. It's hilarious watching building managers yell, scream and push the Asian workers and blame everything on them. The excuses are priceless as well. Write them down as you will chuckle with your friends back home when you finish helping Qatar modernize. The greed in this country is the same as in the US. It will eventually come to the same end.

It's not an open mind you need here, it's a sense of humour and a twinkle in your eye as everything is a facade.

Expect nothing. Do it yourself. You will have to spend 10% of your first year's salary on equipment and maintenance. Accept that and you will be fine.

I have purchased a dryer, air cleaners, vacuums, floor washers, water fountains, desks, TVs, beds and exercise machines. 10% of my first year salary. Fortunately you will find most things much cheaper than in the USA or Canada... - except for TVs. Right now home center has a 50% off sale on water fountains which must be used for humidification - an $80 fountain here costs $200 in the US. So shop carefully and you'll do well.

Despite all this bad landlord behaviour I have met Qataris that are fantastic, intelligent and forward thinking individuals! You will make lifelong friends with them.

Wait till you see what happens to the plugs when you use the heaters on maximum heat!

Have fun and just laugh! Then post something about driving! I can't wait for that!

I don't mean to be argumentative or to resurrect a pretty dead post, but in the US the bathroom outlets are up at sink and counter level or above. Solves the problem of sloshing water around the floor. It's not brain surgery.

I cannot believe a post about dish washers and tumble driers provoked such threads. Give me a break.

I dont know about anyone else but when renting anywhere back home a tumble drier and a dish washer are luxury items and generally not included in the rent. Even dishwasher hookups are not the norm.

As for the bathroom sockets, they dont have them here because it is common practise to literally flood he bathroom with water when showering etc. Also washing for prayer can leave the floors pretty slippy. Same concept applies when middle eastern people go to the UK and see carpet on the bathroom floor. _____________________________________________________

it was presumptuous of you to say that Qatar does not know anything about these appliances. like i said earlier, that was uncalled for.

donnabel;

your attitude and so many others about "If you don't like the way Qatar is leave it" is the CHIEF reason why Qatar is not on the same level as Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Not even Manama for God's sake. This negative attitude means accept bad things and sing their praise!

The reason your ex-country (which you seem to hate now) is so advanced (look at Toronto how great it is) is people didn't accept the status quo! They wanted their country to be better.

How come Abe Lincoln did not accept Slavery and said "this is how it is if you don't like it leave!!!"

How come Roosevelt created the Great social advancement? How come Ike created the great Interstate system? These people were ambitious and didn't want status quo.

People like you and Hessa explain the backwardness here.

It explains why we don't even have one Freeway and people drive over dirt roads. It explains why we have flashing landcruisers!

The reason Qatar is 100 years behind Abu Dhabi (let me not mention USA or Canada) is because of arrogant and ignorant people like you. You think you Qataris have everything but your city is a mess and your infrastructure is horrible and your city is boring and ugly and all dirt (no landscape). Of course you have huge villas and you stuff it with things but you don't care about the street outside your villa. I pay US$6000 per month for a villa which is not worth $2000/month in a beautiful city like Seattle or Portland.

Just go to Abu Dhabi and live there for 1 year and come back and tell me how good Qatar is.

very naive. Did you not think to ask if there would be a dishwasher/washer/dryer provided BEFORE you moved into the villa? Assuming that all children are being brought up by TWO parents is, again, very narrow-minded. If someone chooses to have a nanny either part-time or live-in that is none of your business. Each to his own but you sound very negative and, if that is the case, why don't you get on the next big white bird back to Canada (since you seem to think it is so much better there). I left Canada in 1993 and have lived in several different cultures where I certainly didn't "assume" things would be anything like Canada. Why not open your mind, try to shed your Canadianisms and make the best of your time in Qatar rather than bitching about it. It IS a safety issue and should be taken seriously. NEC and IEEE regs are quite clear about it. No socket within 1m of a tap and should have an RCD fitted to the circuit. I have them in all my bathrooms here, please don't generalise without facts.

Hessa? whats with the tone. Pinky....You need to arrange for your own conveniences. I have rented 4 houses till date in sydney. None of them have more than one power sockets. Come to think of it. The fittings were not configured to accomodate dishwasher in kitchen and dryer (neither in bathroom or in the laundry space).

Need your conveniences. Need to arrange for those to happen.

1. Request landlord for arrangements

2. Request for permission to add sockets and make changes to fittings. Then get it done by a tradesperson.

3. Finally Purchase and install the Appliance.

For me the worst here are: no sockets in the toilet (so women need an extension cord for an hairdryer, for instance) or no laundry area with a sink, only washing mashine (which means if you need to wash something manually you need to use the toilet basin, what is ridiculous to me!). And please, don't come with safety issues regarding toilet sockets, because every single country in this world except Qatar has it!

I agree with you engr2002! These two apliances are lacking here in Qatar which I was very surprised to find out. Like you said even if you do find a good size, reliable dryer or dishwasher, then trying to find a space in your place is hard to come by and the connections(no venting). I could do without a dishwasher although some days it seems like I am standing by the sink all day. But the dryer is something that I really miss. Instanst dry clothes, soft clothes that smell good and not like the dust/sand outside is something that I REALLY MISS!

I asked quite a few people here and it seems that a dishwasher and dryer are STANDARD items used in the AMERICAS.

Interesting, eh? :)

Many newer villas and villas in compounds have dishwashers and dryers.

I don't use a dishwasher, and only use dryers when it's raining or too cold to hang things out, which is seldom.

Dryers shrink clothes, make pills on some fabrics, cause static electricity in others, wastes electricity and heats up the room they are in (which 9 months out of the hot year isn't appreciated). Drying clothes in sunlight purifies them (if you are muslim and concerned about tahara or ritual purity) as well it whitens the whites. I'm from the countryside so I enjoy seeing clean clothes on the line.

There are washers that also dry and washers that are 'stacked' with a dryer above them if you don't have space side by side. You can usually find some handyman to get a washer hooked up. The easiest place after the kitchen would be a bathroom.

Since you dislike live in housemaids and want to teach hour kids how to be responsible, taking turns (parents and kids) doing the dishes is the best alternative.

i bought a dishwasher for my villa but becasue there was no designated space for it i brought in a plumber to suggest how to connect it. he charged about 200 riyals but did a good job and i have been using it since. the only problem with most villas is that they dont have space at all in the kitchen so i wish u the best of luck.

frankly the weather here is so warm i never felt the need for a dryer. My automatic washing mchine dries them well enough and i just leave them out in the sun to dry out completely.

dishwasher and dryers are not in the place you live but since my arrival to doha I have always had the service and the machine (I mean washer/dryer and dishwashing).

Usually and since my family is not with me I do not use the dishwasher, I do my own dishes. And as per the clothes some of them go to the Laundry Svc and the rest just goes into the washer machine every weekend.

By the way (BTW) the washing machine also performs as a dryer and yes I would have to admit that the size is a little bit of an issue when it comes to family quantities.

Nevertheless I have seen big size washer/dryer (separated) or like twin (one over the other). So in this case you should contact your "landlord" and request some clarification.

Best regards!!
