Passport for baby born to mixed nationality
Greetings everyone, I have been trying to hunt for information regarding the topic but have been unsuccessful. Hence, posting it as a new topic and hope can get appropriate guidance in the matter.
We ( Indian father & Filipina mother in Doha) are going to have a baby very soon and are preparing for the legal documentation requirements for the passport. I understand the process for birth certificate and visa; however my dilemma is that which passport will be granted to the baby. Indian law does not permit dual citizenship and Philippines do. Now, can I get passport from both the countries? If yes, then what will be the sequence and procedure? Qatar visa should be stamped on which passport? I am sure there must be other mixed marriage couples in Qatar and your help in this matter is highly appreciated. Note that my wife has a PIO card and we have been in Qatar for more than 2 years. Thanking the community in advance for genuine replies / private messages.
Hi.if u decided to get ur child an indian passport, definitely u can't get Philippine passport. U better go to the Philippine embassy & apply for the report of birth of the child. Then when u go to Philippines, u can apply for the Recognition as Filipino Citizenship, so the next time u travel to Philippines with ur child, u don't need to get visa for ur child.
Good morning. My wife is of a different nationality, and we had a baby in November. We decided to get him the nationality of his mother (at least for now) because that allows him visa free travel to more countries.
There is absolutely no problem in getting RP for baby born in Qatar with different nationality from the father. After we got the birth certificate and the passport from my wife's embassy, we applied for the RP and it was stamped on the baby's passport the very same day.
The different nationality issue can become a problem if you ever get divorced or separated. You will have substantially less leverage in any custody case if your child has the other parent's nationality and not yours.
@tahsinmim: Is "sin" your middle name or just a nick name. Just kidding :). 76 is the number of my favorite jersey. Perhaps we can focus on the topic, rather than trying to spend time in translating names. Thanks for your feedback though.
UK ... I have no Idea...
the baby per the local laws will have to be under your ( fathers) sponsorship. If the baby gets a Filipino passport , just make sure that wont be a issue at the time of applying for the RP ,since you hold a Indian passport -ie- will the local authorities question why the baby is not the same nationality as the sponsoring father? So look in to that.
As for dual citizenship, you cant hold multiple passports in India. As someone else already pointed out, OCI/PIO are your only choices.
UK: thanks for clarifying. Ofcourse, which parents wouldn't have thought of their first baby's name! I am more concerned about the nationality plus the passport issue.
InDoha76 sorry that was a comment for BB.
Anyway a question to you now, have you decided on what you want to call the baby?
Hope to hear from someone who actually have lived through this!
@UK: I don't get your humor! Try to be nice, if you can be!
Indians can get visa on arrival to Philippines as well, provided you have a valid US/UK tourist visa or work permit from another country. Can i apply for both passports along with the single yellow slip (birth certificate)? Last resort would be to apply for Phil passport and OCI, but might take a while to get the paper work done!
What are you going to name the baby BB? lol
You can use the IATA website to check each of the countries.
Here is the ranking of which countries allow visa free travel. Denmark tops the list (169 countries with no visa) and Afghanistan is at the bottom (26).

Fubar can you list the countries for each...lol
UK you are brilliant...
With a Filipino passport you can enter 59 countries with no visa.
With an Indian passport you can enter 51.
Go for Filipino passport, as Filipino can get visa free access to India plus you can have dual nationality!
you get soon ;)
you not Born in A Great Qatar.....LoL
i would say,
get philipine passport and on father s base this baby will get OCI which is better than PIO cared.Life long indian multiple visa with no restriction
choice is yours!
Surely the choice will be dependent on where you wish to settle later on.
Filipino passport is better than Indian so go for that one. Easy to get visas for the middle east and elsewhere.
India allows only OCI & PIO, not dual nationality.
I agree with ahaider, the nationality should be as of the father which in this case its Indian, the Philippines will also acknowledge him/her as a Filipino because of her mother's nationality during birth. I think for now its safe to get the baby an Indian Passport.
India allows dual citizenship, I believe the kid’s nationality should be the same as of father unless there is different rule in Philippines.
Having 2 passports would mean that Qatar visa should be stamped in Indian passport, right? It is not very complex but not too simple coz of visa and citizenship eligibility. It will be good to hear from people who actually have lived through this! Thanks!
Simple, either Indian or Filipino passport. However apply for both and just don't tell the Indians, how will they know.
