A Plea From the Qatar Animal Welfare Society

QAWS WARNING: NOT FOR SENSITIVE VIEWERS

On Tuesday morning I was called out to an apartment building near Subway Signal for a dog rescue.

When I arrived at the site, I found a 3-4mnth old puppy that lay dying on the cement.  I picked the pup up and rushed him to the vet, knowing full well what the final outcome will be.  I wasn't even sure though I would make it, but when I reached my destination, he was still breathing, only just.

He died on the table at the vet shortly after.

The vet diagnosed that he was severely malnourished and dehydrated and due to this had died a terrible death.

The kind people that had called me to collect him couldn't tell me how long he had been there, but the faeces I had seen outside the apartment look quite old, which meant he had probably been there a while.

While I understand that its not always possible to know if you have stray dogs in your area, please take note of your surroundings, as you will soon see a spot he/she might use as a toilet area.  If you happen to notice this, please make sure that if nothing else, you do put water out just in case they come back.  A dog can scrounge for food, but water is very scarce.  If you wish, a bit of food won't go to waste either.

I have attached pictures of the puppy but it is NOT for sensitive viewers.  Please use your discretion when viewing.

Male dogs do not experience being on 'heat'

The best thing you can do for your dog is to have him neutered!

Sorry, but with all the strays thanks to people breeding their dogs without thinking of where the animals will be homed; you will not get any sympathy from me.

Be responsible and have your dog neutered!

I had to look at the photographs, broke my heart

It makes me so angry to know that people can do this to helpless trusting animals, after all, if you give them love and care they repay you tenfold!!!

If  I want to volunteer for dog-walking etc, could you give me some idea of the times it would be best??

Whilst JasmineJasmine is correct, bones can be given to dogs..............but hang on and read before you start giving your dog bones. I grew up knowing what bones and parts can be safely given. Unfortunately that is not the case here, and just saying 'bones' doesn't mean that ANY bone can be given. Many people simply do not know what kinds of bones, cooked or uncooked can be given. Watch out though, because your dog will get very 'gassy' LO ;) and constipated!

My alternative: Bone-meal (ground up bone which you add to their food) and ground baked eggshells. I collect the eggshells, rinse them, place in the oven for a few hours at 100C until they get very dry and brittle, and then I grind them to a fine powder. This I add to their food. :)

SO.........To be on the safe side.............DO NOT GIVE:

Chicken bones, EVER!

Bones from baked, broiled, or barbecued meat. Any cooked bones that become brittle and when they break form sharp edges. Intestinal perforation can be a consequence.

If you want to give your dog a bone then:

Select bones with meat attached and most fat removed. I sometimes get the large knuckle bones or joint bones.

Choose bones too large for your dog to swallow hole.

3 Steps To Safer Chewing

If you think your dog would benefit from chewing bones:

Supervise all bone chewing. Remove the bone if you start to see it splinter or get sharp edges.

Teach your dog to release objects willingly so you can safely take the

bone away if necessary.

Discard after two days; raw bones spoil quickly.

yeah there are a lot of alternatives to Dog food on the internet. But Vet's charges and medicines are an expense you cant cut down.

There are lots of receipes on the net for balanced dog food. Offal is quite cheap here and very nutritious, you just have to watch they don't gain too much weight.  Regular bones and chews are also so important, the main large expense in dogs is dental problems caused by a build up of tartar. If you ask in carrefour, they will cut up bones for smaller dogs and they only charge a few riyals (if you get the right person behind the counter), otherwise you have to resort to sign language, very embarrassing!.

I dont think its absolutely essential to feed dogs "Dog food". Can we not feed them home food- a mixture of meat and vegetables and pulses? It works for our dogs back home.

I agree with point 1. Many compounds have recently tightened up on the rules regarding pets. Pople may have had a dog for a year and then suddenly they are told it has to go. Neigbours can make trouble for people also. However, many of the complaints are about noise. If you work full time, don't adopt a dog unless you are sure he can cope with being alone all day.

The two main vets have similar charges. The fees are something to consider when adopting a dog, you have to be able to afford the vaccinations and medications if they get sick. Personally, I think that the fees are reasonable, you would pay more in the UK for a consultation and medication but it can come as a shock if you are not expecting to pay at least 150QR most visits.

Food is an expense, whether you buy from the supermarket or the vets, it works out roughly the same cost.

I am not saying don't adopt a dog, but consider desaim2's points first, they are so accurate. QAWS want to adopt dogs out, they really don't need to have them returned after a week because the owner didn't think it through!

sorry the vet charged me QR2200/- missed one zero.

You may know that I have a dog which I brought from Janet last year and the Vet charged me around QR220/- for so many injections and medicines, I am still keeping him after one year but the amount of complaints I receive from the compound from my Arab neighbours and also they have threatned me with police action.

My Pet has never been aggressive only thing he wants is attention and wags his tail to go near to anybody in the compound, he has never dirtied any place in the area. So pet lovers following is the problems you may face with your pet.

1. Complaints.

2. High price of Vet fees

3. High price for the nutritious food you give.

4. If you are not careful everybody will throw some food which is not suitable and that may cause food poisoning, and end up paying the exorbitant fees and you cannot find any pet medicines so easily.

How people can treat animals like this is totally beyond my comprenhension.

To those people who drop animals off in deserted areas(or occupied areas either!) and "think" someone will pick them up or just don't CARE if someone will or not...remember, what goes around, comes around in life and death.

Animals are dependent upon humans for survival..so please, be kind to them and at least give them water....if not food....and take them somewhere safe.

Thanks Xena for ptting it up from my side too.

It's hard to look at the pictures.  What a sad end this poor puppy endured.  I add voice to the our plea from QAWS; please remember, summer is on our doorstep.............and it s the worst time of the year for our four legged friends.  Hot temperatures, lack of food and worst of all water; and all that when people leave for their holidays, so the little attention they might have gotten becomes a distant mirage.

If you are here during the summer and would like to help, please let us know.  It is the hardest time of the year for the shelter.  Fostering, dog walking, cuddling and volunteering are scarce during the peak of summer.

On behalf of all of us (Poppy, DQ, Xena and I)  Thank you!  From the bottom of my heart, thank you!  It is only through awareness, and sadly sometimes suffering too (as in this case) that change can and does happen.

Keep spreading the word!  Blessings to all.

Thank you Xena for bringing this sort of thing to everyones attention.

To everyone - the volunteers at Qatar Pets/QAWS (including Xena) do an amazing job with very limited resources and need all the help they can get, so please don't be afraid to contact them and offer your services and/or resources.

And if you're seriously thinking about getting a pet then they are the people to get one from. There are some lovely animals there who would have met the same fate as the dog in this story if QAWS hadn't stepped in. And after one visit you'll have fallen in love with at least one of them. Trust me, I know!

Unfortunately animal rights are going to improve until basic human rights are respected.

They are Qatarising so many jobs esp 'non-technical' ones... well I'd like to see them work under the conditions as the labourers, housemaids etc.

There would soon be some human right laws brought in instead of these fancy conferences and blethering that lead to nothing.

its called Qatar Animal Welfare Society or QAWS.

The only problem is that it is not as yet a recognised facility and the people that are involved are, along with the generosity of others trying to keep it running.

They are a group of animals lovers that will go to the end of the earth if they can, but sometimes in these cases, that just not enough, and heaven is about all we can offer them......
