PRIVATE TUTORS

Please everyone do be careful with how u select a tutor for your children.....i learnt the hard way!! I paid WELL above the average rate, for my childrens tutor 150QR per hour + transport & she was useless. I wanted a tutor who would have English as a 1st language also, so i didnt mind paying well over the odds. So heres how it started:
She was advertised in QL, I emailed her, then we spoke on fone....she professed to be Canadian. ( thats ok )
I arranged to meet her, she was of chinese origins ( hmmmm am i doing the right thing?)
We spoke, she mainly slagged her husbands, cousins wife off ( alarm bells ringing now, but she seems, happy & very friendly )
I agreed to pay her weekly as she asked 6 hours per week at 150QR per hour = 900 + transport 60QR total 960QR per week
We arrange for her to do an evaluation on my children, to see what she thinks they need extra tuition in ( my error again, i should of made her take the evaluation test! )

1st payday comes....shes asking for 1200QR???? im like what the heck for. she said that on the day of evaluation she stayed behind and done some study with them!! ( i wasnt at home i went to work & my maid was at home ) im now thinking but that wasnt in our agreement & I told her so. The conversation went like this from my side " I thought the whole point of an evaluation, was to see what you could teach them, what level u think they are at, discuss any concerns/gaps in their education & then i would decide if i would hire you " Also the evaluation was done with material way above their ages & seem to be photocopied papers from the tutors old college papers, I might be wrong on that but im generally right ;-) but she was adamant that she deserved this payment, so i thought OK just this once i'll go with the flow. I paid her.
I spoke with my husband about it, he said let me deal with her & he stayed behind 1 morning & spoke with her plus he TOLD her we will pay u monthly on the 6th ( we cant always be at home when she comes & we dont like the children having access to the safe ) so at least that way we can see her monthly for an update & pay her as well. we get paid monthly also, so it works out better for us......most jobs here pay monthly. Also i told her use my driver, I introduced her to him & she started using him.
he then started complaining to me about how demanding she is & ,she is moaning to him about the price he charges!!!! he collected her & husband 1 day & husband asked him do u charge madam ( meaning me ) the same amount or cheaper rate??? Im like.....what the heck??
So i stop using him as i feel uncomfortable.
So next i get a phone call at work from my daughter...Im sitting in a meeting with the c.e.o & c.f.o of Transind group & my 15 year old daughters number flashes up on my mobile...." mummy, the tutor wants to know if we can go to the bookstore with her by taxi & buy some books? "
Im like, hell no u cant.....shes suppose to be teaching u not book shopping on my exspense.
Then the tutor calls me & I explain to her that we will go together after i move house in 2 weeks as i would like to buy my 9 year old some story books anyway.
Now shes like .." so ur moving? " i replied yes in the next 2 weeks. I also text her our new address.
Then i learn from my eldest that the tutor has taken 2 of her text books home ( probably to photocopy them for some other students )IM LEARNING FAST NOW lol
OK now heres the crunch......5 days ago, the tutor rings me, " would it be possible to get paid this week? "
Im thinking u agreed with my husband that u would take monthly payment? but i said sure no prob & i even said i would meet her near her home to make it easier for her.
hubby comes home & his now annoyed......he said call her tell her we dont want her services anymore, shes too demanding plus shes exspensive & Is not meeting the correct criteria shes not qualified to teach obviously. Plus why did she want to get paid, just before we move???? she thinks that we will move & not pay her!!! i said to my husband, she wouldnt think that, i text her our new address, he said she prob thinks u made that address up, easy 2 do by text........it hadnt even crossed my mind these thoughts & i actually felt sick from it. So the very next day I text her meet me at mega mall next 2 ur home so i can pay u! the thought of some1 thinking i would do a runner with their earnings is playing on my mind :-(
Going to meet her, i arrive shes not there?? i ring her, she said im over the road at at grand hotel, come to me there.....im driving & do not know this area ( 2nd time in mega mall ) she said take left at round about, i do & end up at the ramada hotel!!! then im on salwa road & the traffic is chocca block. I call her Im so sorry im now lost & stuck in loadsa trafic, i will leave ur fees in an envelope with my maid & eldest daughter, plz collect them when u like before friday as we move then......she said ok........so im now on my way to saudi via salwa road!!!! i have a meeting in Wakrah in 30 mins!! so she calls me saying im with my hubby can i drop by your house & collect money today. im like no cuz im on way to wakrah & already lost & now stuck on salwa road & your money is with me! shes like doesnt your daughter have money on her at home? im like no she doesnt have that amount shes 15 years old for goodness sakes. So then i get annoyed i tell her listen IM TRYING TO DRIVE IN BUSY TRAFIC, IM NOT FAMILIAR WITH THESE ROADS/AREA GO TO MEGAMALL & IF U REALLY THAT BLOODY SKINT I'LL COME TO U & PAY U WAIT FOR ME THERE & BY THE WAY ITS NOT USUAL FOR THE EMPLOYER TO CHASE HIS EMPLOYEES WITH THERE SALARIES ( im already kind enough to deliver it!!! ) then i close the fone on her im fuming mow grrrrrrr & late for a meeting.
well thats the jist of everything that happened.....so be warned parents YOU do the evaluation on the tutor! ask to see a passport for them. ask to see there exam papers. set a simple test for them! & remember if some1 thinks your dishonest & trying to do a runner with there money, they only think that cuz thats what they would probably do!!!! ewwwwww vile thinking

EDIT: For a list of tutors you can check out our Items & Services pages, but as with any service, we suggest you request valid proof of their previous work, or portfolio.

I've always thought that helping people and guiding them is a passion of mine. Until I started tutoring young students and since then, I was sure that this is what I wanna do.

Enrich people's knowledge and train them to face anything that comes their way. Helping them become better with what they do. Find and enjoy their passion.

Try using a reputable tutoring centre. At least the tutors will be qualified and have appropriate experience.

I don't know about others but I've used Geometric Learning Centre and they really helped my kids.

From what I've read, I'm an accomplished teacher but I can't dare work for this winning lady. And who told you that only Westerners can and know how to teach? This is a fallacy, an horrible misconception. We have other nationalities that are doing pretty well in the teaching fraternity. How on earth would you set me a test as an evaluation to teach your child? Madam the drill is simple, test aside, just pick a tutor who is currently teaching at an international school. That proves it all. Just ask for a QID to prove the point. It was your mistake to just pick a housewife somewhere to teach your kids. Secondly if you think that QAR 150 is above market rate then you are wrong. Established teachers won't even touch QAR 200, they charge QAR 300 an hour. The mistake is all yours for poor recruitment skills.

Hi there!

I was born and raised in Canada, and if you'd like I could tutor your children. I'm very smart and English is my native language. I'd love for you to contact me at [email protected]. I'm also TESOL (Teaching English as a Second Language) certified. E-mail me and we can figure out some details! I can tutor any age and any subject.

Hopefully you have everything sorted now. I'm moving to Qatar from England to teach later this month and was hoping to tutor part time. Knowing the competition is so inadequate pleases me as I may get more customers.

Not once in your long, drawn out narrative did you ever mention checking her credentials! did you actually check that she was a qualified teacher appropriate to the age of your children? However you mention a 9yo and a 15yo - this would mean someone double qualified!!

In future ask at your children's school for recommendations? Or even post on a website that deals with tutors - www.tes.co.uk/forums - look specifically at teaching overseas - its a free website for teachers; Dave EAL cafe (sorry don't know the web address) or one of the expat websites.

Hopefully lesson learned!
