QATAR - A SAFE COUNTRY!

Dracula
By Dracula

DEFINITION: Total recorded intentional homicides, completed. Crime statistics are often better indicators of prevalence of law enforcement and willingness to report crime, than actual prevalence.

SOURCE: The Eighth United Nations Survey on Crime Trends and the Operations of Criminal Justice Systems (2002) (United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, Centre for International Crime Prevention)

(Mod Update : Qatar is ranked 81 on the list with only 1 homicide. That's one list we're glad that Qatar is on the bottom of! Full list here)

"I guess the 'unintentional' homicide by wreckless driving isn't included in these figures then?"

Nor the high profile murders, describing a few :-

-The high ranking offical who opened fire on both his half sister and their mother, just because he heard a rumor (he wasn't even charged, although the husband of his pregnant sister wanted justice, but never had it)

-The 8 month pregnant wife who stabbed her poor husband 18 times front and back with their kids only next door

(got out of house arrest in one year)

-The final & most recent one a pious woman had just deleiverd her baby a day earlier in the womans hospital suite on the 5th floor, the husband calmly walks in asks her mother to leave follows his wife to the bathroom and takes her life with a knife.

They all have a very BIG wastas and are apparently above the law here, so definetly that list is as redundant as transperancy.org is on corruption.

C'est la vie!

It's a real incident. Some people in Qatar wanted to get rid of a friend of mine. They hired a crazy driver who hit him when my friend was returning back from his morning walk at Corniche, but he got away with fractured legs.No bystanders noted even his plate number (maybe the vehicle was moving so fast). My friend left Qatar after that incident.People don't report caricide here.

Are you nuts?......no doubt I am crazy about you!

The survey was conducted due to one nation's prevalence of law enforcement and willingness to report crime. Either Qatar's law enforcement is not prevalent or nobody's willing to report a crime committed because it may possibly get you deported.

Like an Ex-Indian cricketer would say, Statistics are like Mini Skirts, They hide more than what they reveal.

Still Qatar is pretty safe country compared to most. Though don't agree with most of the others. Per 1000 people crime rate gave a better indication.

From today's Peninsula

"The Economist magazine’s annual book of global economic statistics and quirky facts — Pocket World in Figures. The 2009 edition of the book, often described as the fact-lover’s Bible, contains facts and data on 182 countries and profiles of more than 65 of the world’s major economies.

Qatar suffered four times more injuries in road accidents per 100,000 people than the second-placed country, Kuwait, and tied with South Africa for the most road deaths, the report shows. "

FOUR TIMES more than 2nd place Kuwait!!!!!!!

I doubt the authorities here report any crime statistics because it makes Qatar look bad. You all know as well as I do that there are murders here that no one talks about. So the figures for the study would be false I would say.

this is data from 2002 we are almost into 2010......and this is a list of intentional homicide so does not reflect on total crimes committed.....still qatar it can be said is a satisfactorily safe place.

Pay special intention to this "Crime statistics are often better indicators of prevalence of law enforcement and willingness to report crime, than actual prevalence."......though it does show that crimes were committed the plus point is that people still possess enough faith in the law and judiciary to provide justice to them.

xpresso thx for doing the per capital calculations is pretty meaningless without it.

Excluding road accidents and industrial accidents Qatar seems remarkably free of "random acts of violence."

Traffic accidents are among Qatar’s leading causes of death.

Safety regulations in Qatar are improving, thanks to a more stringent traffic law adopted in October 2007 and a country-wide traffic safety campaign.

However, informal rules of the road and the combination of local and third-country-national driving customs often prove frustrating for first-time drivers in Qatar.

The combination of Qatar’s extensive use of roundabouts, many road construction projects and the high speeds at which drivers may travel can prove challenging.

The rate of automobile accidents due to driver error and excessive speed is declining but remains higher than in the United States.

In rural areas, poor lighting, wandering camels and un-shouldered roads present other hazards.

Despite the aggressive driving on Qatar’s roads, drivers should avoid altercations or arguments over traffic incidents, particularly with Qatari citizens who, if insulted, have filed complaints with local police that resulted in the arrest and overnight detention of U.S. citizens.
