What exactly are you trying to say, joyfd? And what does a diet plan have to do with education in Qatar?

There is a good reason for this. These schools are awful! Terrible! How do you know that a school is appalling? Because if it was any good it would be full up.

As I may have mentioned before, parents who have just arrived or who are about to arrive in Doha have (or will have) a slight problem. All of the good schools are full up and have long waiting lists. Some of them will not even put your child's name on the waiting list because they say that it is full up! On the other hand, there are some schools that may perhaps have a place for your child. There is a good reason for this. These schools are awful! Terrible! How do you know that a school is appalling? Because if it was any good it would be full up.

As for anyone who is thinking of teaching at a school in Doha, be warned that there is something called the SUPREME (AND ABSOLUTELY PERFECT) EDUCATION COUNCIL. The main purpose of the SEC is to interfere with the running of international schools and to make sure that Qatari students get lots of Arabic, Islamic Studies and Qatari History. Just what young people need in the 21st century!

I hope to start in September and my own children will be attaending the school. In addition they have many long term international teachers which confirms to me that they must be doing something right.

The worst school in Doha, running by two crazy ladies (no management at all), they don't know what is right and wrong for students, they are very much afraid by Qatari students .On complain of any Qatari student, they can make problem for you without any logic and not ready to listen you. Just they are making money, doing fashion, showing off, saving their job and no interest in student education. Strongly recommended not to register you children's in this school, otherwise you will be regretted later on.

I have never taught at Al Maha School, but I did find these comments that are below posted on a website called The International Schools' Review.

Comments: This school is a total sham. I was one of 15 new Western teachers arriving here to teach Islamic children and for the first time, the school had a large Western Teaching staff.

We were greeted by a Western Head who was friendly and Supportive. 2 Days into the first term, we were told she had been dismissed and we were refused a reason why. They have dismissed 8 teachers/managers in 3 weeks since. When I arrived, I was asked to teach the UK curriculum. I was told the pupils needed an English specialist. I know this sounds too unbelievable but there was not one single book in the school for KS3. I was told I could not teach Shakespeare or anything with the word 'pig', I could not read a book with magic, fairies, Harry Potter especially, girls having a relationship with boys, no books on girls dancing and absolutely no films of any kind because it would have music in the credits.

Primary were told under no circumstances were they to sign or clap or play an instrument. We were not allowed to say 'silly' because it may offend and I was not under any circumstances allowed to say anything about Christianity. Teachers wearing a cross were told to take it off. We were then told our dress code was to be changed and all teachers must now wear skirts to the ankle, that our elbows were not to show and we were only to wear lose fitting clothes as well as making sure our tops covered our bottoms. It just got worse. I was told that I had given the pupils unacceptable grades. In the secondary, they appointed a muslim part time French teacher with no experience (except she was muslim) to literally run the secondary as it had no Head or Deputy and there were no Heads of Departments. I pointed out to the acting Principal that I could not teach GCSE unless I taught Shakespeare. I was then told to just teach part of the curriculum instead, but not all.

I also found out that I was the 9th teacher they had in a year and 21 had been dismissed in 2009. I spoke with the acting Head and asked if I could buy a book for the following term and I was told that last year, they followed a study text, but a parent had noticed that there was a pig mentioned in it so all the teachers were instructed to rip out pages thought to be anti Islamic or insulting to Islam leaving just 4 pages remaining. Obviously, they couldn't teach with the book, so it was discarded. At least this explained why there was no books and I realized my request for a book was going to be denied unless it was Islamic which meant I could not teach literature.

Every new Western teacher was now vulnerable after 8 had been sacked and I was eventually called to the office. I had been teaching 'Persuasion in the media' and mentioned that in the Middle East, they sell a product called 'Fair and lovely', a facial cream for women which equates success with a white skin yet the most powerful man in the world (Obama) was Black and did not have to be white to be a success. I was told I had been 'Anti Islamic' by mentioning an advert. I realized there was no way I could argue this point and decided to just accept my dismissal.

If you teach at this school, you will be given fantastic accommodation, you will receive a fairly good salary, but you will not actually teach. You will also be expected to fix grades and under no circumstances will you give a pupil less than level 1 (they have introduced the APP). This is despite the fact most students can hardly speak English or write it. They work hard, but lack the necessary skills and they were a really lovely bunch of kids, if very spoilt. I was told they would expect me to fix grades, but I decided that I would just give them the grade they deserved, rather than wanted, and apparently, that and the French teacher come Head of secondary resulted in my downfall.

Do not work at this school if you have any western qualities because you will only end up being either sacked or run off in the night despite the fantastic accommodation. Also, under no circumstances are you to drink. We were one of the few schools who were not allowed a drink license and it was immediate dismissal if you did, nor was it allowed to be consumed on the compound. We were also told not to be in an apartment alone with a man as this is considered 'Haram' and we had to adhere to Islamic principles in and out of school.

I am bringing my kids the end of sumer this year and looking for schools, any advise? My kids are coming from an American system school in California. School fees for chouifat is not posted on their website, any idea? Please advise

but, some of those schools I mentioned are only for Elementary.

I assume your 50,000 is in Qatar Riyal. If that's the case, few schools (ASD, Doha College) will be slightly higher that that (around 60,000 QAR). The others will be around or below 50,000.

To get a place in International Schools here in Doha is a major problem. Cross your fingers, and try your best to get one for your children.

My kids are going to a British kindergarten. They will open their primary branch near Tadamon round-about for the year 2010-2011. They offer an opening discount up to 25% for the first 100 children in the school. Their teachers are all from Britain, America, Canada, Australia and South Africa. My son has been registered with them science 2007. I appreciate their efforts with my kids. Also, I am very satisfied with their educational standards and the kindly atmosphere with parents.

Ive been offered a year 3 teaching post. Just to put all your minds at rest (if you are planning to send your kids there or that they are already there) I was asked very important and relevant questions in my interview and they need back up with documentary evidence for everything included in my CV. They have been throrough in selection which states that they need good teachers for the best education.

I hope to start in September and my own children will be attaending the school. In addition they have many long term international teachers which confirms to me that they must be doing something right. Anyone going to Al Maha to teach or have children to learn there- Im a good teacher and I am assured the staff there are also good. Hope this personal factor overrides some of the negative impressions given.

I send my boy to Al Maha, and he's doing very well. In literacy and numeracy, he does reach the right level and comparable to where he should be in a UK school (I've tested him at home). It may be that his teacher is especially good, but I really have nothing to complain about in terms of his academic standards.

I know a lot has changed in his school since September, and its been mostly positive. We didn't have to pay the 2500QR for the books - sense prevailed and it was cut down to 900QR!

I think its unfair to label it as rubbish. I know some dedicated, caring teachers who do a wonderful job there. Don't get me wrong, I do have some serious issues with the school, but locally, they seem to be very open and act quickly to put things right.

I asked about the issue of the nurse, as I wanted to be sure that my kid was in a safe environment. They did assure me that the 3 or 4 members of staff on standby if the nurse is absent are fully first-aid trained and one is in fact a qualified nurse before she changed profession to a support worker. I just needed to be sure!

Not the best school, but I'm happy with my kid at Al Maha.

Thanks "Not From Here". My deal is I am an extremely worldly American with a Spanish wife. We have lived the last 6 years in Spain (previously London and Amsterdam). I think my kids may be best off in university in the U.S. but not necessarily. We don't plan to move there ever really.

I want a place that will give them a great education allowing them to develop a global view of life and ultimately encourage them to seek a global career. They speak English, Spanish and French. And fortunately school costs are not an issue.

I will be in Doha soon to wrap things up and visit the city, looking at schools, villas/flats and convincing my wife to move there.

You may want to make the transition easier for them by choosing a similar system/curriculum.

Or you might want to consider in which country they will be attending college and make a decision based on which school here might be most compatible.

We will be moving to Doha soon and have two children ages 10 and 12. We need a school for them and I don't really know where to begin. They are native English speakers (American father) but have never lived in the U.S. and we do not intend to move there ever. My question is if I can choose any school regardless of its costs is there one which realistically stands out as very good and is accessible to very bright children?

The curriculum doesn't matter as long as the kids get a great broad general education.

My girls are currently studying online as we are in a remote city in china with no int. school so it looks like we'll just continue until school resumes. try cedars and if that doesn't work you may wish to look for an on-line school. Doha schools are shut down for most of the summer and no one offers summer schools as 90% of the western expats leave. No one wants to be here in the extreme heat. There are lots of youth groups depending on what hobbies your girls have.

try to buy a copy of the MARHABA book as soon as you get here. It is found in all major shops/groceries/book stores etc. It is a guide to Qatar and has lists of restaurants, schools, shopping places, things to do in Doha, and a great list of contacts concerning hobbies/sports groups etc etc etc. I have been here 5 years and I still buy it every time they put a new one out. Always good info in it.

HI. We are moving to Doha at the end of march. I have 2 teen girls,12 and 13(turning 14). Compass have opened there applications for there new campus but as they don't offer there year bands currently my girls are going to be out of school for the next 6 months. Are there any schools that offer summer camps. I don't seem to be able to find that info available. Are there youth groups for teens to meet each other?

You are right. Do not join. They recently asked their good staff to leave without any reason. They have their personal favourites. They hire you from UK or elsehwere. Once you managed there departments and they find somebody else chaeper than you, they will ask you to leave. Even they can ask you to cut down your salary even after when its confirmed. If you are late for few minutes, they cut it down. You are dependent on managment all the time. They are a bunch of greedy people.

A sincere advice to parents. Please do not send your children to Al Maha English School. I am telling all this from my personal experience. The standard is very low. They mentioned that its Islamic and English school but it should be labelled as only islamic school. A very low grade english school. Their advertising is very good that is why they attract more local people to join. But reality is very different from what they exactly are. They have been through several managment changes. The present managment is Human Soft which are the same people as Al jazeera academy. A bunch of greedy people.My children were there and I know how they make parents a fool. A friend of mine used to work there. She mentioned some issues to me. They charged 2500 QR for class books which are actually not more than 500 QR. later when parents complained they appologised and added the other resources cost in it. Children in year 5 and 6 are still struggling to read basic english books. They even cannot read and write a simple english sentence properly. There staff is also not qualified as they mentioned. Art teachers taking english classes and when the nurse is absent, anyone can take her place. This is a health and safety issue. Any teacher can cover anyone. Please do not send your child there. This management is wasting your time and money. Your child will be a below average student if you him there. They can make you happy by showing some UK staff there. But actually they are very small in number. Who actually have british accents only and no qualifications. Please be patient search for other schools.

From what I heard, Al Maha does not have a good reputation Wa Allahu Aalam . But It depends on the offer you have. Could you be more specific.

just to say that Doha College prices have been hiked since that was psosted or since it hasnt been updated in website etc...doha college prices, not sure for lower school, but i know that for 6th form its 11950 a term...scary isnt it, we pay as much as primary pays for a whole year @ dess :D

A problem I have started to encounter is the availability of places in the schools.

I have a 4 year old daughter and a 14 year old son. I should be arriving in Qatar to take up a new job in the next few weeks with the family coming over for the start of the September term.

I have contacted Doha college and they are full. I have also contacted DESS and they are also full.

I am awaiting replies from a few other schools. I guess I can go through your list and hopefully finding something.
