Wireless from my neighbors
For IT and network security experts, here is the issue at hand.
One of my unknown neighbors decided to let their wireless routers to work without password, and that is bothering me.
I like to keep my children within safe online experience via setting keyword blocking and customized DNS from my home routers, and this neighbor is rendering my efforts useless. In addition, I know that many wireless hunters would use it for Voip on their mobiles and so on.
I can login to his router, and can do anything I want. Here is the question, should I mess with it such as changing the wireless name or put a password so he may get advised to password his wireless? or do you suggest other ways?
See this is what happens when you dont beat when they are small.... Pls take some training from Indian fathers and your work will be done.
Do let us know the results.
Peter goes: "Since when Kids need Internet on their phone anyway? People here are FREAKING weird!"
You said it yourself wise man.
You still need to educate your children Translator...you won't always be around when your child manages to get access to free wifi. Your children must be old enough to understand if they have internet access on the mobile phones. It's not your neighbour's nor QTEL's fault if your children are disobeying you.
I am narrow minded? hahaha
You sign up to technology and decide to offer your kids cell phones and computers, you gotta live with the consequences and not cry like a little girl if your neighbour has no password on his internet. (Now I can see who ur kids will take after when they grow older)..
Allocate time to use the freakin computer like the whole world does with their kids and get them a phone that has no internet. Since when Kids need Internet on their phone anyway?
People here are FREAKING weird!
Trans..
Qtel earns well, its a monopolized company..
Routers comes with a password so it should have ideally..
Maybe your neighbor is just not aware of it or simply don't care about it..
Your suggestion will benefit both Qtel and its costumer..
Include my name in your suggestion..
tigabaguio, mine is also just 1mb, and the neighbor's is 2mb !!
Qtel should be concerned about the revenues they loose by such users.
I will place a suggestion to them so that they scan around for open Wi-Fi and make sure the users password their routers in the contract terms.
I think its optional to put a password..
I wish im near your place so need not to pay 250 a month with just 1mb speed..
Peter, I do not see the reason for not taking this matter seriously. The internet offers a broad range of exciting and interesting opportunities, yet there is the flip coin of it, just like everything else. Children spend countless hours exploring the cyber world, and that limit their time to school assignments, practicing sports, and face to face socializing. It is not your narrow focus on boobs that concerns me. I have a timer set on my router so that the internet would be limited to certain MACs after certain time at night, for different days of the week. It is my right how to raise my children, and I would not allow technical liberals like you dictate that right for me.
He has no right to transmit his open internet signal into your property? hahahahaha
You just made my day.
Yeah man, your kid will grow up to be a bad person if he sees a boob online..
way to go...
Peter, I know it is a lost battle for many parents, but I would rather not quit easily. Your key logger idea is useless, who have the time to review all the log, and how do you put that on mobile phones?
As I pointed out earlier, he have no right to transmit his open internet signal in my property.
What are you trying to hide from your Kids? Information?
If you think they can't see or view what they want, you will be really mistaken?
Qtel already filters the hell out of requested data. what are you scared of?
As to your question, if that person chooses that he/she don't want to have a password, who are you to mess with their router and assign them one? Would you appreciate this being done to you?
Buy your self a key logger SW and monitor your kids laptops/tablets if you are that paranoid..
Even with WPA passwords, the avg person can now hack the network and get connected.
Let your kids breath man!
Also what smokin suggested is will work for a few days until your neighbour enables broadcasting and your kids figures out the trick.
What about my movies ?????
Im Glad my suggestions were the one you were looking for.
Smokinn, I was looking for such answers, you are da man !!
The trend of answers went into children education was not my intended outcome. Most children get exposed to unsuitable contents without their choice to do so. Facebook for example, requires a certain age to create an account. Yet, zillion of children have Facebook accounts by choosing their age above the set limit, and the content presented are not filtered as children are not supposed to have access to Facebook.
May be you can login to the router and disable the Wireless broadcast and then remove the previous Wirelss history from ur kids computer and then Ur kids wont be able to connect as they dont see the wireless signal physically. But the neighbour too wont find the wireless signal, but they get connected without any issues.
Parental responsibility is yours, discipline your children! Who is in control in your house, who makes the rules and enforce them? I fully agree with many others that responded here, the neighbors and for that matter the whole neighborhood can do as they please as long as you and your family's health and well being is not compromised, like contaminating the air that you breath but your childrens discipline in your responsibility, make the rule and apply the if you abuse you forfeit the privilege - it is a privilege granted by you that they can use the net, not so. If the neighbor get into trouble with unauthorized users on hi IP address he will learn the lesson and pay for his stupidity.
Manage your children and don't blame technology.
Do you know that other countries are having free wifi connections everywhere. I beleive that Qatar is heading to that same route.
You cannot close a mall or a park's free wifi because your kids are using it for free.
cAN YOU DONWLOAD FEW MOVIES FOR ME ??? Thanx in Adv. lol.
cAN YOU DONWLOAD FEW MOVIES FOR ME ??? Thanx in Adv. lol.
Yah, Qtel and Vodafone offer me free service while passing through my property, I wish.
The sender of wireless signal have more at stake if you think about it. Illegal online activity from anonymous user of his wireless could be traced back to him, and only him.
most would want to access internet free by having an unlock signal around. But here, the OP is complaining. Can you switch house with my colleagues? Lol!
There are so many other signals passing through your property without your permission like Qtel signal, vodaphone signal etc. Why dont you go out and destroy all their transmitters as well.
You have to understand that it is not the transmitter which is a problem, it is the receiver. Unless you educate the receiver, you will keep on having this problem.
Snessy..
If translator is using a booster receiver he will have to knock all houses within a 100 meters radius range..
I suggest you put a password for a night for him to get aware then remove the password the next day..
Another case of parents preferring to take short cuts rather than doing the right thing i.e. talk/counsel/guide their own kids.
I just don't get, why is this such a big issue?? Just knock on the door of every neighbour in close proximity.
Why don't you just move to another flat?
So you are saying you don't know which of your neighbours it is?
abc150, as long as his router doesn't transmit internet signals in my property without my permission. I am paying for rent of this property, and uncontrollable internet was not in the contract.
snessy, I said an unknown neighbor,
parental control software may work on Windows computers and Macs, phones and other handhelds not as easy or even possible. I wish one from Qtel help here. I can provide Qtel with the MAC of the 3G router, they can do the rest.
Perhaps I missed something here, but I thought you said it's your neighbour, why not just pop round? Can't be far if you can access it from your place...
Agree with Jim Mc, you just need the parental control activated which will work for you regardless of the connection used.
Talk to your neighbor, some folks are just unaware of the consequences of having their net connections unlocked and free for all.
Meanwhile you will also have to get down and serious with your kids and tell them point blank what is acceptable and what is not. Issue some good threats as to what will befall them if limits are crossed. And add the words "And I will find out!" for a good measure. Worked for me! Cos at the end of the day nothing beats a good educational talk with em Rugrats..All the best!
snessy, I do not know how to contact him, and I have no doubt that he is not aware that he should password his router.
I thought Qtel blocked inappropriate content?
Simple solution may be to create separate log-ins for your kids, password protected with parental controls activated so whatever connection they use they cannot access inappropriate content. Of course, change the password on your admin account and don't tell them.
How old are your children? If they're old enough to use the net, they're old enough to understand. I personally would speak to the neighbour, he may not realise it's not password locked and may appreciate you letting him know.
You cannot make your kids listen to you but you want to mess up with some one else's router. Your neighbour's router is his and it is his prerogetive to protect it with a password or keep it open. His open router is not causing any damage to you if you try to keep your kids under control. You mind your own business and try to keep your house in order. Today you want to mess your neighbour's router and tomorrow you will destroy all cars on the road since your kids wont listen to you and will ride their bikes too fast and rash.
datuabo, my kids are young for that, and they know my wireless password. It is easier to say about telling kids than actually making them understand why.
give your pw to your kids and prohibit them from accessing 3x sites instead of minding other property.
you can advise to your kids not to use others wireles
this is my humble advise to you.
da_ruru, my kids learned how to use software to change MACs of their laptops
use the MAC FILTERING of his router. From there you can block your children's wifi address from connecting to his router.
Mandi, I can put my list of computers on that router as banned from service, but that's alot of work with so many laptops and phones etc
cherukkan, that worked with another neighbor, I was able to scare him quickly by pointing that people can send messages and it could be tracked to his IP, it took him 1 hr to take care of that.
My network was set up by my husband's employer. They didn't install a password because they wouldn't remember it! Can't you block that wireless from your kid's computers? My Macbook has a setting that says something like "don't use this network again."
Mandi
I forget to mention, that it looks like he is using a 3G gateway, and that made not possible to know his phone number (which Qtel uses as ADSL ID), otherwise I would call him.
Err, talk to your kids rather than screwing with his wireless? It is his! Talk to him?
Mandi
Mandi, His children are using the wireless connection of his neighbour which is open to everyone.
Translator, What about talking to your neighbour to password protect his wifi. Try that first and if he is not in a mood to coop then try other options.
My children use his wireless instead of mine
In what way is your neighbor rendering your security efforts useless?
Mandi
