Three friends went to a hotel. The bill was Rs 75/-

Each one contributed Rs.25/-.
The waiter took the bill to the cashier.
The cashier was happy & decided to give them a discount of Rs.5/- & asked the waiter to return them Rs.5/-.
Now the waiter was confused. How to distribute Rs 5 among 3 persons?
He kept Rs 2 in his pocket & gave one rupee to each one of the 3 persons.
So initially each one had contributed Rs.25. Now as they are given 1 rupee back, their contribution reduces to Rs 24.
They all contributed Rs 24 -- that is 24x3=72 & 2 rupees are in the waiters pocket.
The total becomes 74. But they had  paid Rs 75.
Where is the remaining 1 rupee?.

Equation : 24x3 = 72 & 2 = 74  is wrong ( 72 already includes  2 )Correct equation is 24x3 = 72 + 3= 75There is no 1 riyal missing

In simple terms:

1. 70 to Hotel

2. 2 to Waiter

3. (1X3 = 3) back to them.

4. TOTAL = 75

Where is anything lost in the transaction. It is the jugglery of words and nothing to do with maths.

The problem is the statement"They all contributed Rs 24 -- that is 24x3=72 & 2 rupees are in the waiters pocket. The total becomes 74. But they had  paid Rs 75."  The above statement is wrong as the 72 includes the 2 rupees of the waiter and again cannot be added.

The bill was 75 rupee. Then they were given  5 rupees discount, so the bill is actually 70 rupees.

When the waiter gives back 1 rupee to each person, it means everybody paid 24 rupee, which is all together 72 rupees. 70 out of these 72 rupees goes to the cashier, and 2 rupee goes to the waiters...

They didn't pay 75 rupees, they paid only 72 rupees: 70 was a bill and 2 was a tip.

When you tally the bill backwards, you add the amount paid and the amount returned. So you add bill=72 & change=3 totaling to 75. You don't add waiter's change 2 as it is included in the 72 you mentioned.

In your logic

"They all contributed Rs 24 -- that is 24x3=72 & 2 rupees are in the waiters pocket."

should read as:

They all contributed Rs 24 -- that is 24x3=72 & 3 rupees was received as change.

They paid 25 each at first  = 75

They got back 1 each

Thei contribution is 24 each  = 72

The bill after discount = 70

The tip paid to waiter = 2

Total paid = 72

There is no 1 rupee missing.

I wont steel just 1 rupee.
