Y, y do people start the line with "Working hard like a dog?" when dey see sumone working alot... When actually, all the dog eva does is lay around the house and give out de occasional "Woof, woof". Y do dey compare the term working hard to a Dog?
That's funny because I once used to compare my husband to a DOG. You know running around with all the bitches (female dogs) and then always winding up back on my door step! Thats the kind of dog that works hard!!
like dogs... not dogs who live in our decades! dogs in history had to transport people and work all day hard! so the proverb comes from the history of the dogs! but if you want to update the proverb... you should say u work hard like a piston in a V12 racing car engine! whaahaha
There are farm, dogs in some parts of the world, ie Australia, New Zealand, that work hard at rounding up sheep and cattle, they are on the run continuously, and only stop to rest after the work is complete. These dogs are very efficient at their job, and will work a herd of sheep or cattle many hundred at a time, much better than a rider on horseback. The term " worked like a drovers dog" means that person worked hard and long...
well what it means is that in olden days and now even dogs have been doing all sort of work such as sheepherders, work as guard dogs, customs etc,are used for hunting, are eyes for blind and ears for deaf.and yes inspite of all this, they work hard & they dont charge a dime, surely this means something doesnt it?

Back Home we say:
"Works like a Donkey"
But I do expect that it depends on its origin.
yet all mean the same thing...
Over worked, under paid, mis treated and not appreciated...etc.

it is not dog it is mentioned as donkey
It is basically the expression based on how dogs are treated.
Working like a dog means "It's dog's life" (I think so).
