Breast Cancer Awareness events in Qatar
October is a month dedicated to bringing more awareness and shining a bright, pink spotlight on what breast cancer is. Our genes, lifestyles and environment we live in can all be risk factors in developing breast cancer at different stages. Check out the places that are providing mammograms in Qatar this month!
How does Breast Cancer happen?
In our bodies, many cells are made for different functions. There are many cells being born, being damaged and dying, as we speak. One of the processes that happens in our bodies is when an existing cell, clones itself making two identical cells with the same DNA.
After the duplicating process, the job gets assessed with a number of checks. If everything looks normal and clear, the body has two more healthy identical cells newly created. Most of the time, the checking process is accurate and detects if the process failed to duplicate the exact DNA of the original cell, if a mistake was spotted, the cell with mistakes just dies. However, if the checking process did not detect a mistake in the DNA, the new cell survives with carrying mistakes. That generally is not problematic, however it does become a problem when this mistake-carrying cell duplicates itself and makes new cells splitting into abnormal cells at a fast rate which can form a tumour
Not all tumours are cancerous but when tumour cells have the ability to destroy neighbouring tissues, that is when those tumours become life-threatening. This process is what happens in breasts that can lead to breast cancer.
Breast cancer is more common in women, but men can develop cancer and also pass it to their offspring, through genes. “Risk factors of breast cancer in men are radiation exposure, high levels of the hormone estrogen and family history of breast cancer.”
