Posters on nutrition details to be put up at supermarkets soon
Taking note of Qatar’s raging problem with unhealthy food habits and obesity, steps are being taken by officials to counter it at the point of origin.
In a new campaign to promote healthy eating habits among people, posters with information on nutrition contained in food items will be displayed at several supermarkets across the country, according to The Peninsula.
Posters will be designed to help consumers decide what food items to buy to make a healthy and balanced diet, officials said.
The Ministry of Public Health signed a memorandum of understanding with Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar (WCM-Q) and Al Meera Consumer Goods Company (Al Meera) to launch the public health awareness campaign.
The MoU will facilitate to educate the public with a wide range of information on nutrition through posters displayed at Al Meera branches in the country.
The awareness posters will initially be displayed at five Al Meera branches — Legtaifiya, Gulf Mall, Al Wakrah, Thakira and Geant, with plans to expand the programme later at more branches.
The nutrition information will be prepared by WCM-Q’s Sahtak Awalan programme and the ministry in accordance with the Qatar Dietary Guidelines issued in 2015.
Qatar STEPS Non-communicable Disease Risk Factors Survey 2012 showed that the majority of adult Qataris (91 per cent) consumed less than five servings of fruits and/or vegetables on average a day, 45.9 per cent of them had low physical activity, and 41.4 per cent of the respondents were obese and 70 per cent overweight.
