Serena Williams withdraws from Qatar Open
DOHA: In what is a huge setback for tennis lovers in the country, women’s World No.1 Serena Williams has pulled out of the Qatar Total Open due to flu.
The 21-time Grand Slam singles titles winner had been a major attraction for the WTA Premier 5 tournament, which starts on February 21.
“I unfortunately have to withdraw from the Qatar Total Open as I’ve come down with the flu and do not feel 100 per cent. I need to take this time to recover, but I do look forward to returning to Doha and seeing my fans soon,” said Serena, who became the tournament’s second biggest casualty after the pull out of former champion Maria Sharapova.
“Although we’ll miss Serena, the tournament remains one of the most keenly contested on the WTA Tour. We hope to see Serena in Doha next year as we wish her a quick recovery,” said Tournament Director Saad Al Mohannadi.
