Are you from the Wolverine era?
If you ever wanted to be a superhero, which one would you be? If the question is directed at me, I would definitely say the name of a particular indestructible man, with large sideburns and three metallic retractable claws on his hands.
Wolverine is my man. So it is with great sadness I hear that Hugh Jackman will be retiring after Wolverine 3, in 2017, having already acted in seven X-Men movies since 1999.
It’s been 16 years already. That’s half my life watching the Australian looker do what he does best... growl, roar, bring out those claws and tear do some serious damage.
Just to put things in perspective, here’re some of the things that happened around us since Jackman started playing the iconic character.
1. Spiderman was launched, given a trilogy and even rebooted
The first the world saw of the ‘friendly neighbouhood webslinger’ was in 2002, three years after Wolverine revealed himself. Since then, three Spiderman movies came and went, as did two in the rebooted series.
2. Thefacebook was launched
A certain person called Mark Zuckerberg, way back in 2003, sated ‘Thefacebook’ which later became that legendary ‘blue-themed’ site. It has spawned a massive following of close to a billion users, but Wolverine still grows stronger.
3. Global Positioning System (GPS)
No, I’m not talking about Googe Maps, Googe Earth or even Googe Streetview. I’m taking about the time when we were revolutionartily spared from using the paper map when the GPS came onto the market. Since then, the sweet-tongued lady, or the stern gentleman, has been telling us where to go.
4. Wikipedia was launched
Can today’s chilcren dream of a world without Wikipedia? We did, as did Wolverine, until 2001. It was that year that Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger started the service, which would lead us to the information overload we’re living through right now.
5. Youtube began
Though the ability to stream video was around since 2000, Youtube, which revolutionised the process, was launched in 2005. Watching movies, or the clip of your favourite uncle trying out the ice bucket challenge, have never been easier.
6. Kanye West started bringing out albums
Kanye West, who sharply divides opinions wherever he goes, started becoming a thing on the world msuic scene. It was in 2004 that he brought out his first hits — All Falls Down and Slow Jamz. Love him or hate him, he’s here to stay. But well, at least he’s not as old or bold as Wolverine.
7. Gmail made its game-changing entry
I have over 26,000 emails, from way back in 2000, in my inbox. Thanks to that little titan called Google, which has completely taken over our lives. But hey Google, we know someone who’s way cooler and wiser than you...
8. Harry Potter came to a screen near you
Though British author JK Rowling sat in that desolated train station and thought up of a boy wizard named Harry Potter and his two friends in 1997, it came to full technicolour perfection only four years later. The rest, as they say, is history.
