WATCH: Star Wars in Qatar?
With the stunning (not to mention unconventional) scenery that dominates the Star Wars films, it’s not hard to imagine Qatar’s sand dunes making a cameo role in the ones to come.
Thus far, Jordan’s Wadi Rum made the cut, with its striking red-orange sand standing in for the pilgrimage destination planet of Jedha.
Luke Skywalker’s igloo-like home in the desert was actually filmed in Tunisia near Le Grande Dune, not far from Nefta, so the MENA region could be called something of a go-to for dry desert planets.
It turns out that the refuge of Luke Skywalker was filmed on an island called Skellig Michael in Iceland, along with several other locations used in The Force Awakens, including the dormant Krafla volcano.
London’s Canary Wharf, which is in fact, a modern London Underground Interchange, was used as a stand-in for the Empire base on Scarif in Rogue One. It is quite a fitting spot for shooting such a high-stress scene.
The woods of Endor were filmed in California, and the exteriors of the ice world Hoth were shot in Finse, Norway. Locations in the Maldives, UK, Guatemala and Italy were also been used for the franchise.
Richard Serra sculptures anyone?
