1998 champions France reach their third World Cup final after beating Belgium 1-0

France beat Belgium 1-0 to reach the 2018 World Cup final on Tuesday after a thrilling game in St. Petersburg.

A second-half header from Samuel Umtiti proved to be the difference between the two teams, which gave their all in the contest.

Although Belgium enjoyed large amounts of possession, Umtiti’s headed goal in the 51st minute from a corner was enough to put 1998 world champions France into their third World Cup final.

Umtiti, who was dropped by his marker Toby Alderweireld, outjumped the tall Marouane Fellaini to head home from an Antoine Griezmann corner. It was so fast that the ball was in the net before Belgium keeper Thiebaut Courtois could do anything.

They will meet the winner of the other semifinal — England or Croatia — in the tournament’s final on July 15, Sunday. The losers of the second semifinal will play against Belgium on Saturday to find the third-placed team.
