2013 was cooler than previous years
The year 2013 was relatively less hot for Doha as temperatures and humidity level were lower compared to previous three years.
Maximum temperature was observed at 46.3 degrees Celcius in July at Doha International Airport in 2013, which was lower than maximum temperature in previous years.
According to the reports of Qatar Meteorology Department and Civil Aviation Authority, maximum temperature was 50.4 degrees Celcius in July in 2010, 48 degrees in June in 2011 and 47.7 degrees in June in 2012.
“It is a weather cycle of four-five years and temperature and humidity move as per the cycle. Currently temperature and humidity are following declining trend. Once the cycle is complete both will again show rising trend,” said an official of Qatar Meteorology Department.
“Also last year, Qatar witnessed thundery rains in May which were highest in past 30 years. It also helped in bringing down the temperature,” he added.
The average highest temperature in 2013 was 39.3 degrees Celcius in July, while the average highest temperature recorded at 43 degrees in 2010, 2011 and 2012.
Humidity also followed similar trend. Maximum relative humidity was recorded 98 percent at Doha International Airport in February 2013 while it was 100 percent in 2010 and 2011 and 99 percent in 2012.
According the to the Meteorology Department, this cycle is not unique to Qatar and is observed in entire gulf region.
“Level of humidity is dependent on wind directions. Qatar sees high humidity because of Easterly winds,” said the official.
