Alert customs officials seize 23kg marijuana and 4,704 narcotic tablets
Qatar’s General Authority of Customs (GAC) had a field day recently when they prevented the entry of 23kg marijuana and 4,704 illicit narcotic drugs into the country through different entry points.
Officials at the Hamad International Airport (HIA) foiled three attempts to smuggle the drug into the country, reported Gulf Times.
A customs officer on duty, who became suspicious of a few bags, send them for more detailed manual searched and was found to contain between five and 10kg of marijuana in it.
The third attempt was foiled when a female customs official decided to search a bag thoroughly. She found a big piece of marijuana as well as 4,000 narcotics pills missed with other legally permitted medicines. A specialist then separated the permitted pills from illicit ones.
The fourth attempt was foiled by the Land Customs Department at Abu Samra when they seized 704 narcotic tablets that were being smuggled into Qatar inside the spare tyre of a car, reported The Peninsula.
Customs officials, who grew suspicious of the behaviour of the driver, discovered the illicit drugs. The driver has been detained.
“We’ve highly trained staff and officers and they were instrumental in the success of such operations, foiling potential attempts to smuggle harmful things. They’ve grown well accustomed to the most common ways used by smugglers and can easily detect them,” said Land Customs Department Director Murshid Al Kuwari
The four employees who were behind the success of these operations were honoured by GAC president Ahmed bin Abdullah Al Jammal for their efforts.
