The 2022 FIFA World Cup may still be almost four years away, but that has not stopped fans purchasing tickets to it, albeit it being at a charity event.

Renowned American actress Julia Roberts, who is also a self-confessed football lover, paid $100,000 for two 2022 FIFA World Cup tickets as part of a pre-Golden Globes fundraiser organised by actor Sean Penn for his Haiti charity — CORE: Community Organized Relief Effort.

Julia Roberts, who attended the auction with her husband Danny Moder, purchased the tickets at the end of a friendly bidding session, reported Gulf Times.

Stars who turned up for the event at the Wiltern Theatre in Los Angeles also included Ben Stiller, Casey Affleck, Larry David and Connie Britton.

Jamie Foxx, Keegan-Michael Key and Mike Myers all took to the stage to encourage the audience to bid for the tickets, and it was Julia Roberts who walked away with the grand prize, reported the Mail Online.

Roberts, 51, is a huge football fan who in the past has rubbed shoulders with the game’s biggest names including Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Juan Mata, Sergio Ramos, Zinedine Zidane, Luka Modric and Paul Pogba.

Her three children — Patricia and Phinnaeus, both 14, and 11-year-old Henry — all support Manchester United and played at Old Trafford with Wayne Rooney’s children after a match against West Ham in 2016.
