An ‘anti-Qatar’ conference, organised by blockading countries and held on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference, crashed and burned when there were no takers for it.

The conference, titled ‘Arab Diplomatic Conference,’ was held in a hall at the Charles Hotel next to Ludwig Maximilians Universitat, the venue of the Munich Security Conference. Its objective was to encourage imposition of sanctions against Qatar.

“The countries imposing a sea, land and air blockade on Qatar invited journalists to attend their own meeting,” reported Al Jazeera.

“When no one showed up, organisers reportedly hired a PR company and the room was filled with young women who told us they were mostly from Eastern Europe.

One of them read a statement she’d been handed by the organisers,” the channel reported.

“I would like to say at today’s conference that I’m surprised by what’s being done by the state of Qatar, and I think that Germany, Europe and the whole world should stop Qatar in any way,” one of the attending women was reported as saying, according to Gulf Times.

When they were asked why they were attending the event, some said they were paid to do so.
Meanwhile, The Peninsula reported how the conference quickly descended into a joke.

A speaker named Nancy, who identified herself as a member of the Washington Center for Political and Strategic Studies, spoke in broken English and asked India and the USA not to buy Qatari gas. This prompted the audience to burst out in laughter, reported the newspaper.

According to Al Sharq, a student embarrassed organisers by asking why Qatar was not invited to respond to the accusations against it.

As the conference went on, the hall went virtually empty and it caused enormous embarrassment to the organisers.
