Aspire Zone and Wega sign pact for hosting multi-game eSports World Cup
Over the years, Qatar has focused on bringing a variety of sporting events into the country. Thanks to this policy, the state has seen the hosting of ultramarathons, staircase runs and strongman competitions.
And now, Qatar is opening up to the possibility of eSports, which is slowly gaining a worldwide following.
As a first step, Aspire Zone will collaborate with Wega, one of the world’s leading e-payment systems, to organise the Middle East’s first multi-game eSports World Cup — the Aspire Wega World Cup, reported Gulf Times.
The tournament, debuting in 2019, will have online and offline qualifying rounds running all over the world.
The first edition of the eSports World Cup will lead to a live final competition in Doha in 2022, on the sidelines of the FIFA World Cup kick-off.
The alliance, between two major institutions from sports and new technology backgrounds, will offer players around the world with a unique opportunity to compete in a four-year competition on an international scale.
“We’re always looking for new concepts and supporting innovative events, and we believe this partnership will be an additional platform through which we can highlight Qatar’s ability to organise international events,” Aspire Zone’s Chief Marketing Officer Mohammed Mubarak Al Kuwari was quoted as saying by The Peninsula.
