Doha Metro contract awarded to construction consortium
FCC has been awarded a contract by the Qatar Railways Company to build a section of Doha Metro red line (Qatar) for 506 million euro.
The winning consortium led by FCC, the Citizen Services Group, also comprises Archirodon (Greece), Yüksel (Turkey) and Petroserv Ltd. (Qatar). This is FCC's first major project in this Arab Emirate.
The execution period is 31 months and the project will create more than 1,000 jobs.
In the bidding process, the FCC-led consortium competed with groups from South Korea, Germany, Italy and India, among other countries.
The contract includes building three elevated stations (Barwa Village, Al Wakrah and Qatar Economic Zone) and a 6.97-kilometre section, plus tunnelizing the road at the entrance to Al Wakrah.
The total budget for the Doha Metro project exceeds 20 billion euro.
This project comes just six months after FCC obtained the largest international contract in its history: the construction of three lines of the Riyadh Metro, for over 6 billion euro.
In that project, FCC heads the FAST consortium, which comprises Samsung (Korea), Alstom and Setec (both from France), Strukton (The Netherlands), Freyssinet Saudi Arabia, Typsa (Spain) and Atkins (UK).
The total budget for the Riyadh Metro is more than 16.3 billion euro.
As FCC executives discussed with Saudi authorities and the Spanish Development Minister, Ana Pastor, during an official trip, construction of lines 4, 5 and 6 will begin in the second quarter of the year, employing over 15,000 people from 15 countries.
Thus far, geological studies and terrain surveys have been completed, in line with the proposed calendar.
The consortium team in Riyadh numbers some 160 people, around 40 of whom are FCC employees from Spain.
Another 220 people are located in Madrid, Paris, London, New Delhi and Dubai to provide support for the project. The execution period is five years.

Lol. I'm not a beggar.
Actually I hope that they do start to introduce toll roads on Salwa, the Corniche, D-Ring etc. And I hope that petrol prices are doubled. Doing so will have a great impact on traffic congestion.
Instead of people going for a drive as a way to pass the time, they might just stay in their house.
And I am supportive of them building a metro system. I don't live or work near any of the proposed stations, so unlike the residents of West Bay etc I'm not one of the unfortunate people suffering from the inconvenience of the construction of stations.
Guess the 'I' is limited to 'I' as far as begging goes.

Metro Rail, is a new enhancement for public transportation, its wonderful. we could travel to all part of this country without any risk of breakdown. Let them implement in all parts of the country.
Now they should seriously think about implementing alternative and eco friendly options for power.
Its high time to implement CNG as an alternative option.
Since KARWA & MOWASALAT are not so effective to be the main option for the people who doesn't have car. I hope the metro will do.
It is a good development. Every developed country in the world today has advance Rail transportation. Not only does it help de-congests the roads, but can transport more people at a time, safer and available for whoever- rich, middle and low class. Qatar spending on development infrastructures is not only about the world cup in 2022, life will still continue afterwards and in a long run all these infrastructures will still be available for use.
even before the Dubai Metro is completed, Dubai is already charging motorist in using Sheik Zayed road (by Zalek)... but still the charge is minimal compare to how Dubai is maintaining their roads in always good condition unlike Qatar where majority of the roads is in very poor condition...
I think we can safely say that the new tunnel being built to connect West Bay and the Airport will be a toll road.
this will lessen the traffic a bit but hopefully qatar will not install toll fee on every Highway such as Salwa road. :(
Dubai didn't force people to use the metro.
But they did start charging people to drive on Sheikh Zayed road, so now the poorer people either take the metro or spend twice as long in traffic, while the rich can drive down a better road with less congestion.
I would love to see a metro in doha. and stop driving to work daily.
THIS IS A VERY NICE PROJECT.I AM WORKING IN THIS SAME RED LINE SOUTH UNDERGROUND METRO-RAIL PROJECT UNDER A SUB CONTRACTOR COMPANY AS A SAFETY OFFICER AND I WILL LIKE TO WORK WITH THE MAIN CONTRACTOR COMPANY.
To all Expat QLers..Although we have our own opinion, Just plain and simple, if you are not happy working here..Then, time to pack your things and go back to your mother land...
What I want to have job here then what I have to do
@Fubar, heaven sake, do not compare Doha with Dubai. No way. They are spending millions on consstruction of new roads, express ways and fly overs every where to ease the congestion inline with 2020 forecast. Then why should they force expats to take a pleasure ride in Metro ? is there any logic ?
Well Dubai has a Metro. What better reason could there be for Doha to have one?
We all know how this will end - after the Metro is finished, expats will be told to stop driving and use the metro instead to help ease traffic congestion... Will we then see further restrictions on driving licenses? Parking and petrol to get more expensive?
Is there a real need for a metro within Qatar ? aiming for 2022 crowd ?
What to do after 2022 ? Once the projects are completed, sure there will be a reduction in population.
