Double strike by Ahmed Musa gives Nigeria win over battling Iceland
Nigeria kept their World Cup last-16 hopes alive when they scored a 2-0 win over Iceland in Volgograd on Friday.
Ahmed Musa proved to be the Super Eagles’ saviour as he pummelled in two goals in the game’s second half.
Musa broke the deadlock in brilliant fashion in the 49th minute, stretching his leg to control a Viktor Moses cross from the right before hitting the ball on the half volley past Hannes Halldorsen in goal.
His second came in the 75th when he bustled past Kari Arnason, rounded Halldorsen and planted a right-foot shot into the net.
Iceland were awarded a penalty following video review but Gylfi Sigurdsson ballooned his 83rd-minute spot kick over the bar.
The Group D result means Nigeria, Argentina and Iceland can all still progress with Croatia, who are assured of a last-16 place.
