Expat gets 15-year jail term for bid to smuggle hashish
A Doha Criminal Court has sentenced an expatriate to 15 years in jail for attempting to smuggle 2.5kg of hashish into the country, local Arabic daily Arrayah has reported.
The court also imposed a fine of QR500,000 on the man and ordered his deportation upon serving the sentence.
The defendant was caught while entering the country through the Abu Samra border post after returning from a vacation.
The Customs inspector on duty there felt his behaviour was suspicious and got his vehicle thoroughly searched.
The contraband was found hidden near the rear fender of the vehicle. Also, a blood test on the defendant showed that he had consumed the drug.
During interrogation, he admitted to taking hashish but denied owning or knowing anything about the contraband found in the vehicle. He also claimed that the vehicle had been rented.
The court convicted him based on the material evidence and testimony of the Customs officer.
