FIFA Secretary General Fatma Samoura confirms that Qatar 2022 is well on track
A UAE official had recently landed in a controversy when he said the ongoing illegal siege of Qatar would be lifted immediately should the country decide to forego its organisation of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Qatar dismissed it with the contempt it deserved and FIFA had said that it did not care to comment on mere rumours.
However FIFA Secretary General Fatma Samoura put her weight behind Qatar by saying that the 2022 FIFA World Cup will be a ‘fantastic event,’ reported Gulf Times.
She expressed confidence that the current geopolitical situation in the region would be resolved by then.
“We continue to work hand in hand with the LOC to follow the progress on the geo-political situation. We’re five years from this competition and I'm pretty sure that by the time we kick off for the opening of the World Cup in Qatar, the situation will be solved,” she in a detailed interview with the website for the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy.
“We encourage also the mediation effort that has been undertaken by several world leaders, and if there is a way in which football can help in order to bring peace and stability in the region, we would be more than happy also to contribute to that,” she added.
The top official said Qatar was well on its way to completing all the stadiums on time.
“I think that in terms of infrastructure, the projects are really unfolding as planned. One of the main stadiums at Khalifa International Stadium was inaugurated in May, and from the visits we’re undertaking, and the meetings with the local organising committee, we’ve no reason to doubt that it’ll be a fantastic event,” she was quoted as saying by The Peninsula when asked about Qatar’s progress on the ground.
A further two venues for the tournament are scheduled for completion by the end of next year, with all stadiums set for completion in 2020.
