Qatar’s announcement a few months back about its intention to open visa processing centres in eight different countries had been met with widespread acclaim.

And now, after intensive work, the first of eight branches of the overseas Qatar Visa Centre (QVC) will open for business in the Sri Lankan capital city of Colombo today, reported Gulf Times

The initiative is expected to considerably simplify the procedures for recruiting expatriates and preserving the rights of all parties involved in the recruitment process.

A number of top government officials from both Qatar and Sri Lanka, members of the Qatari embassy in Sri Lanka and media representatives are expected to attend the formal opening of the QVC, according to The Peninsula.

Once open, the QVC will oversee fingerprinting, processing of biometric data, medical examinations and signing of employment contracts.

These centres are expected to be of huge help to government and semi-government institutions, private companies and recruitment agencies to complete work visa procedures through a single window in a time-bound manner.

The entire project is being overseen by the Recruitment Support Services Department at the General Directorate of Passports in collaboration with an assigned company.

Once fully operational, workers will be able to go to the QVC in his country, register his entry, sign the contract of employment and then go for different tests and fingerprinting procedures, reported Qatar Tribune.

Once the medical and other tests are completed, the final approval and issuance of visa will be done. The entire procedure is expected to take the maximum of one hour, with the results becoming available within 48 hours.

After Sri Lanka, QVCs will also be opened in Indonesia, Nepal, Tunisia, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh and the Philippines in the first stage.
