Hosts Russia thump Saudi Arabia 5-0 in opening match of 2018 FIFA World Cup
Hosts Russia made a dream start to the 2018 FIFA World Cup by thumping in five goals past Saudi Arabia at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow, today.
The game, between two of the lowest-ranked teams in the tournament, was not expected to offer much thrills, but that assumption proved to be wrong.
While Denis Cherushev pumped in two goals in the 43rd and 91st minutes of the game, Yury Gazinsky (12th), Artem Dzyuba (71st) and Aleksandr Golovin (94th minute) scored one each to complete the rout in front of a partisan crowd at the 81,000-capacity Stadium.
The 5-0 win was Russia’s first this year. The going will get tougher in the next few days as they face off against Uruguay and Egypt.
Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin called for nations to set aside their differences and pop star Robbie Williams featured in a musical opening ceremony.
