Man fined QR8,000 for causing traffic accident and then fleeing the scene
A young man, who caused a traffic accident and injured a person before fleeing the scene, was apprehended and punished by the court of first instance, reported The Peninsula.
According to the report in the newspaper, the man was fined for two offences — causing injury to another person and for fleeing the scene.
The prosecution accused the young man of negligence, carelessness, lack of care and disregard of laws and regulations, causing injuries and driving a vehicle to endanger the lives of people and money.
The court, accepting the prosecution’s arguments, sentenced the man in absentia with a fine of QR3,000 for causing wrongful injury and a fine of QR5,000 for escaping from the scene.
Later, when the accused objected to the fine, the court dismissed it as he was not present during the judgement. Code of Criminal Procedure states that the absence of accused, without an acceptable excuse, in any of the judicial sessions specified for the hearing of the case, is not allowed and any opposition thereafter is not allowed.
