MEC penalises several street vendors for operating without valid licences
The Ministry of Economy and Commerce (MEC), in co-operation with Ministry of Interior and the Ministry of Municipality and Environment, carried out a surprise inspection campaign targeting street vendors on the Doha Corniche, reported Gulf Times.
The inspection resulted in the uncovering of a number of violations and the street vendors, who operated without obtaining commercial licenses, were penalised, according to The Peninsula. Violators were later referred to security authorities for legal proceedings.
In an attempt to create a stimulating investment environment for the private sector and entrepreneurs, the Ministry of Economy and Commerce had earlier launched an initiative to regulate the work of street vendors by specifying permissible activities as well as requirements, standards and conditions for issuing a license.
The initiative aims to improve the quality of services offered to the public and guarantee compliance with laws and regulations governing the various commercial activities.
The MEC had in recent times cracked down hard on illegal commercial activities, shutting down a shop for selling fake fire extinguishers and also another shop for selling expired items.
