Based on the latest statistics, over 4,000 motor vehicle crashes in Qatar occurred causing more than 600 major injuries resulting in over 200 deaths take place in Qatar every year.

“Road traffic injuries (RTIs) cause one out of every eight deaths (12.5%) and are the leading killer in Qatar, causing more deaths than cancer or cardiovascular disease,” Hamad General Hospital’s Trauma, Vascular and General Surgery head and senior consultant Dr. Hassan Al-Thani has said.

In 2007, HMC established a Trauma Centre at Hamad General Hospital as the country’s only trauma centre.

The centre is one of the leading facilities for the care of injured patients in the Middle East and was recently recognised by the World Health Organisation and the Arab Health Awards.

The centre evaluates more than 5,000 patients each year and its establishment has resulted in a 50% reduction in deaths among patients admitted to the hospital with serious traumatic injuries.

In 2011, HMC’s Ambulance Service, which is assisting the trauma centre, received accreditation from the Joint Commission International (JCI).

With this achievement, the Ambulance Service, formerly known as Emergency Medical Services, became the first in the region, and the first national ambulance service, to be accredited by the JCI.

The centre and the Ambulance Service are key components of Qatar’s trauma system, providing essential post-injury response to victims of road trauma.

how about dashboard cams on all private cars and giving 100 to 500 QAR (or half the fine) reward for submitting dangerous driving (ex. cutting and braking) caught on their camera.

Yes, a bit of caution plus some patience plus some respect for others will definitely go a long way to reduce traffic accidents. However, such things demand a rebirth in thinking of an entire society which is almost impossible.

Only 4000? I'd be surprised if it wasn't more. I think a lot of the problem is not necessarily Qatari's as someone said, but their drivers. Let's be honest, they can come from a place that has cars held together with little more than duct tape, and then come here to earn a living and suddenly they are driving a 6 litre, 3 tonne vehicle with no real comprehension or teaching of the huge difference in stopping distances or the difference in the centre of gravity. Even if they pass their test over here, it's in a small sedan type vehicle. Also the number of people in these 4x4's who will sit 2 feet off your back bumper when you're doing 100kph. Absolutely no chance whatsoever of reacting if the lead car has to brake suddenly (usually after some idiot has moved across 3 lanes of traffic with no indicators and no real gap to do so). Video cars including undercover ones should be monitoring the roads.

the problem here is not about the expats... the real problem here are the qataris.. they dont know how to respect other drivers; they cant wait for a second in the middle of the traffic; they always makes some $#*% in every driver they pass by thru yelling and raising they hand; nothing will change if the locals itself doesnt do anything for a change , they are the ones who makes the problem, they have to change their mindset in driving and how to dealing with other people, yeah we all know that qatar is for qataris but we also know that qatar will not be a qatar without US... Stop issuing driving licenses to Qataris

Britexpat: A colleague of mine had the "pleasure" of being in once.He spent the whole night inside and got released the next morning after paying a penalty of SR 300. From what I learnt, there is nothing much to do while inside except making some new friends and talking on various subjects of mutual interest. During your next trip, possibly you may want to find out if this system still exists.

I travel to Saudi regularly. Crossing red signals leads to a fine - not jail.

Thelonius: In Saudi Arabia they put you in jail for several hours with a penalty if you were unable to stop and had crossed the red signal. If one deliberately crosses the red light, the jail term is for three days and penalty is also higher. However, the law looks the other way when Saudis break the traffic signals. As such, one sees the jails being filled with 80% expats and just 20% Saudis. Yet again at the end of the year when the statistics are reported in the newspapers, it gets to show the expats to be the greatest violators on traffic rules on the roads! Of course it would be as the Saudis are caught only when the violation are of serious nature and the authorities cannot just keep their eyes shut!

Agree Thelonius, plus additional fines.

If a vehicle is involved in a major accident, then put a huge fine/penalty upon renewal of the registration, how about 10,000 QAR minimum? Sounds fair?

The Culprit to 90% of the accidents is always Big White Land Cruiser. At least that's what I see on the roads.

well,,what do you expect,,The FAT CATS here think they own the road. They don't use INDICATORS,they can't stay patient at signals, they can't stand any car in front of them for a second in traffic and they want to race anyone who has a small car..Accidents are bound to happen.I wonder how they get their license..

"More than 4,000 road crashes happen in Qatar annually", that's only 11 a day. We all know there are more than 11 accidents per day here in Qatar.

Do they happen just like that or because the drivers are so bad and always distracted or on the phone

By Equin0x• 23 Dec 2013 11:34
Equin0x

Qatar has just a few roads, that too are not safe, why? because Speed Limits are Higher and the roads are full of inexperienced and distracted drivers with no powerful check on them.

However there is a light at the end of tunnel, as a new mobile radar is set to take care of the above main problems and it is hoped that accident ratio shall go down substantially.
