A Gulf national motorist has been ordered by the Criminal Court to pay QR200,000 blood money for causing the death of an Indian expatriate through rash driving, local Arabic daily Arrayah reported yesterday.

The motorist was also fined QR10,000. The convicted man was driving his car opposite to Hamad General Hospital, and because of his neglect and lack of attention he collided with an Indian expatriate pedestrian who was crossing the road.

The victim suffered serious injuries which resulted in his death. The forensic report proved that the victim suffered brain haemorrhage and multiple fractures.

The convicted man denied rash driving and claimed that the victim caught him by surprise by crossing the road right in front of his car, but the court considered the incident as manslaughter for which the defendant must pay the blood money in accordance with the Law No 19 of 2008.

The judgment stated that the payment of the blood money is a joint responsibility of the accused person and the insurance company.

Even on traffic light, the pedestrian crossing is 2 m away and they still cross in the middle of the street. That is just plank stupid. They should increase a the green barriers everywhere so that people are forced to avoid ignorance.

Yea there should also he a law for all these people crossing suddenly out of nowhere on high ways, busy roads and causing accidents. I have seen it specially on Hamad hospital street. This is due to lack of parking, traffic and ignorance. This is simply not India, where u run wild all over the streets. They need to educate these individuals intensively buy conducting safety induction programs. Liability is a very serious thing and it should be taken into consideration. In Saudi Arabia they have caught gangs who specialize in blood money and actually have people who's jobs rely on throwing themselves in front of cars.

Most western countries operate victims of crime compensation authorities. Victims are provided with financial compensation, and not just if someone dies, but typically criminal events such as domestic violence, child abuse, sexual and physical assault, homicide, robbery, drunk driving and vehicular manslaughter. These schemes vary from one country to another, but I'm not sure where you got the idea that this sort of scheme doesn't exist in the West.

blood money is not about valuing life but to compensate the family in part for what has happened to ease the burden they may have - it is not about working out what a person is worth. Compared to the Western court system where a family suffers financially in a criminal case - and never see any money to help them through a tragedy.....

The driver won't pay 200,000. He will pay the fine, and the insurance company will pay the blood money.
