NBA superstars to tour Qatar to see progress of 2022 World Cup projects
NBA stars always enjoy a huge following all over the world. Some of the best NBA players of the current and former generations will be visiting Qatar, starting today.
Two of the best names in the NBA circuit at the moment — Houston Rockets star Carmelo Anthony and Golden State Warriors’ Klay Thompson — will tour Qatar and visit different 2022 World Cup stadium projects.
They will be joined by former NBA stars Tracy McGrady and Luke Walton, who currently coaches the Los Angeles Lakers team.
The four basketball greats are visiting the country at the invitation of the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy (SC) and the Qatar Olympic Committee.
As part of the trip, the four Americans will visit the Khalifa International Stadium, the first 2022 FIFA World Cup stadium to be completed, as well as the world class Aspire Academy.
On September 3, Thompson, a four-time All-Star, and Anthony, one of NBA’s all-time top scorers and a Hall of Famer, will hold a masterclass workshop for school students at the Qatar Academy.
A number of children, both Qatari and expatriate, will get the chance to brush up their basketball skills with pointers from Walton and McGrady.
The players will visit the Shafallah Centre, compete with Qatar’s national women’s basketball team and also interact with students from Doha-based American universities Georgetown, Northwestern, Texas A&M and Carnegie Mellon.
The superstars will get a taste of local Qatari culture as they visit the old Souq as well as the Museum of Islamic Art.
Those who are keen to meet the superstars can be at the arrival terminal of the Hamad International Airport today at 4.30pm.
