A new committee to resolve labour disputes in Qatar is on the anvil
After arriving to Qatar, if you enter into a labour dispute with your employer, then things can get very, very hard for you under present circumstances.
But it seems like better days are coming soon. Local media reported that the Qatar government is trying to set up a committee to resolve labour-related disputes, in line with amendments to Law No 14 of 2004.
The Gulf Times reported that the initiative was a part of the government’s efforts to ensure workers’ rights and simplify judicial procedures in such cases.
Qatar News Agency said that the law would include the creation of one or more committees at the Ministry of Administrative Development, Labour and Social Affairs, which will be charged with settling labour-related disputes.
Under the new system, the new entity will be responsible for settling all disputes related to labour law and work contracts within a maximum of three weeks.
A judge from the Court of First Instance, who will be chosen by the Supreme Judiciary Council (SJC), will chair the committee.
Two ministry officials from the Administrative Development, Labour and Social Affairs will also be nominated.
In addition, there is also provision for the setting up of an appeals committee, where complainants can appeal the decision of the first committee.
It seems to be another move in the right direction. Hopefully, it will put a brake on labour violations that happen in the country.
Qatar is still one of the best in the world in terms of less crime, justice with expats etc, however, every good step is giving more charm in Qatar. I love you Qatar!
A move in the right direction.. We don't need too many committees.
The committee should have the right to freeze the funds of the employer in order to pay the wronged employee..
Did they say 'when' this will happen?
