Police impersonator, who stole money and credit cards from drivers, jailed for a year
Anyone who has driven in Doha may have experienced or at least seen people get pulled over to the side of the road by plainclothes policemen (mostly for harsh driving) and asked for the driving credentials.
However, sometimes, some people may have also experienced impersonators acting like policemen for whatever reasons. One such person, who impersonated a police officer and stole money and credit cards from unsuspecting drivers, has been caught and sentenced to one year in jail, according to The Peninsula.
The Court of First Instance punished the man, who pretending as a policeman, intercepted cars and asked for victims’ ID and credit cards and stole money from their wallets.
According to the case documents, the public prosecution referred a young person to the court on charges of theft of cash.
A witness testified that he was with the accused in his car. The accused, who first wore a civil dress, later changed into police clothes and stopped two cars on the road. He then asked their passengers to show their wallets and money.
According to the investigator, the phoney carried a baggage in his car that contained a police uniform and a number of credit cards belonging to different persons.
The defendant was sentenced in absentia.
The court had initially sentenced him to a three-year prison sentence. But he challenged the verdict and the court reopened the case. In its new judgment, the court commuted it to one-year imprisonment.
