Qatar-Turkey JV is main contractor for 2022 stadium at Al Thumama
The Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy (SC) has named a Qatari-Turkish Joint Venture company as contractors for building the Al Thumama Stadium, one of the venues for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Qatari construction giant Al Jaber Engineering LLC and leading Turkish construction firm, Tekfen Construction, are the two companies that have won rights for building the stadium, reported the Supreme Committee’s official website.
Arab Engineering Bureau, the oldest architectural and engineering consulting firm in Qatar, had been confirmed as the Design and Construction Supervision Consultant for the 40,000 seater stadium in 2015.
Al Thumama is the seventh stadium for which the main construction contract has been awarded. The venue, which is located just minutes from the Hamad International Airport, is scheduled for completion by 2020 and will host 2022 World Cup matches until the quarterfinal stage.
The announcement of a contract being awarded to a Turkish company comes at a time of exceedingly warm relations between the two nations, reported Arab News.
Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan had visited Qatar earlier this month, along with other officials.
At the time of last year’s failed Turkish coup, it was reported that the first call Erdogan received from a foreign leader was from Qatar's Emir, HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.
Earlier this month, Qatar’s Finance Minister Ali Shareef Al Emadi had said the country was spending almost $500m each week on major infrastructure projects for the World Cup. The eye-popping spending is set to continue until 2021.
