Easy-to-remember car registration numbers have become such a craze among Qatari citizens that one of special car numbers auctioned online by the Traffic Department attracted a bid of over QR200m, ($54.92m).

The Traffic Department has been holding online auction for 19 special car numbers and the bidding is ending at 10 pm tonight, repoted The Peninsula.

The amount of QR200m has been bid for car registration number 333355. Until yesterday, the highest bidding for this number was QR400,000 less than QR200m.

Bidders, as per rules, are required to make a deposit of QR20,000 ($5,492) as earnest money for taking part in the online auction and quoting their bid amounts.

Bidding was to start from QR100,000 and the auction is being held through the Metrash 2 service of the Ministry of Interior.

The last bidder, it has been announced by the Traffic Department, will be given an additional 15 minutes when the auction ends at 10 o'clock tonight.

Winners of the auction should report to the Traffic Department within a given timeframe after the online process has ended to pay cash and collect the number.

Some of the easy-to-remember car registration numbers being auctioned include 353535, 363636, 373737 and 333377, among others.

What do you think of this craze for special numbers? Is the money spent worth it?

Why don't you all think that this rich man's ultimate intention is to donate QR 200m in charity? At the same time he gets something out of it, which much more better than doing charity and publicizing in the media. Allah knows the intentions, that is important

Just a thought.. The people spending those amounts of cash on the number plate it's there on right! And all of you are saying give the cash to poor! Of course but what do you know how much do they give! Maybe 10 times that and the cash they spend on the plates are at the end off the day going back to the State of Qatar and they will be used to pay salarys of the polis to make new roads new safer roads! Did any of you think that maybe this is ther way to pay back to a country wich is giving them everything they have..

Just a thought...

Well there was similar auction from ooredoo for fancy mobile numbers and the money was given to charity.

We dont have any report saying the money will not be given in charity. So keep mind and thoughts open and positive.

don't say it could have been given to the needy poor people...

the winner is giving all money to charity and just to help poor people...

surely, how poor is a rich person...May God reward the winner...Cheers Qatar!!

For us...it's insanity indeed. But for them(millionaire/billionaire) who don't know anymore where to spend their money, "it is just for fun."

Not worth it, its just numbers... that QR 200M could have been used for donations for the needy around the world. The person would have more news coverage, than owning a special number.

I can't see the logic why you need such car special number that is so expensive than your car. Not worth it.
