The much-respected company said it had broken ground on the £1bn project at 30 Grosvenor Square, which is the former site of the historic US Embassy, reported Gulf Times.
The hotel, once complete, is expected to have 137 guest rooms, five restaurants, six flagship retail units, a spa and a ballroom with space for 1,000 guests, according to reports.
Famous British architect Sir David Chipperfield has been roped in to refresh the Grade II listed building. His brief will be to retain the unique external façade to reimagine the spirit of its original pioneering architect Eero Saarinen.
The new design is expected to showcase the building’s mid-20th century heritage by combining traditional and contemporary craftsmanship through exquisite and refined interiors, reported The Peninsula.
“Today, as we break ground at 30 Grosvenor Square, it marks a momentous occasion for Qatari Diar. The opportunity to transform such an iconic address is something that only happens once in a lifetime. We’re extremely proud to be responsible for it. We recognise the history of the building and are dedicated to sensitively redevelop the former US Embassy into a new destination on Grosvenor Square,” said Qatari Diar CEO Abdullah Al Attiyah.
The entire project has a completion date of 2023.
