Refurbished Khalifa International Stadium to host Emir Cup final
The iconic Khalifa International Stadium, which is one of the venues earmarked for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, will host its first match post refurbishment on May 19.
The Emir’s Cup final, between Al Rayyan and Al Sadd, will mark an important milestone in Qatar’s preparations for the quadrennial World Cup in five years time, reported Gulf Times.
“We’re happy that the Khalifa International Stadium will again host football matches in Qatar. The stadium has been witness to the most prominent sporting achievements of Qatar and is a venue that is closest to Qatari hearts,” Qatar Football Association President Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa bin Ahmed Al Thani said.
Meanwhile, tickets for the 2017 Emir Cup final are set to go on sale today, reported The Peninsula. Organsiers have released the first batch of 10,000 tickets, priced at QR30 each.
Fans will be able to purchase tickets for the final at Souq Waqif from today until the day of the final. Tickets will also be available at the gates on competition day.
The refurbished stadium will be protected from all kinds of weather conditions with a shade that covers the sides. Advanced cooling techniques will also be used to keep the arena cool, reported Qatar Tribune.
Earlier, the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy (SC) had completed development of pitches at the stadium in a world record time of just 13.5 hours.
Khalifa Stadium will also host the opening game and final of the Gulf Cup in December.
The stadium has played host to several Emir Cup and Heir Apparent Cup finals in the past and was also the main arena used during the 2006 Asian Games and the Asian Cup football tournament in 2011.
